Primary Function

The primary function of this position is the safe operation and educational soundness of numerous studios in the School of Art and Design for the production of both 2D and 3D artwork. In consultation with the Director and the faculty, the FAS Tech Specialist will work with students and faculty in the safe use and maintenance of equipment and in the appropriateness of equipment to resolve aesthetic issues in art making. In consultation with faculty, this position will make recommendations on and assist in the acquisition of new or replacement equipment and in long- and short-range planning for the efficient use of studio spaces relevant to equipment needs. The FAS Tech Specialist may also teach periodically as needed.

Duties and Responsibilities (generally)

a. Monitor students and equipment during set open hours in which the woodshop can be utilized by all students in the School of Art and Design for discipline specific needs. Duties include assuring that students are using equipment safely, making certain that equipment is running properly to allow for safe use, and helping students with technical problems related to class specific projects.
b. Maintaining equipment in the woodshop, sculpture studios, Sycamore Road Annex woodshop and Fourth Street woodshop studios. This includes monitoring the quality of and changing perishable machine parts such as blades, sanding belts, grinding wheels, etc. Other maintenance needs include making sure machines are running properly, replacing broken parts or machine engines when practical, and procuring the materials related to equipment maintenance.
c. The supervision and delegation of duties to graduate assistants assigned to the sculpture or woodshop areas.
d. Extensive safety training on the proper use of all woodshop-related equipment for all students enrolled in the School of Art and Design Foundation Program. This includes a woodshop-related project during which time this position works closely with students addressing the students’ safety and technical needs for 2-3 weeks of class time.
e. Obtaining and maintaining basic OSHA and BLS 10-hour certification training.
f. Inventory management for School of Art and Design equipment ranging from furniture to computers to discipline-specific materials.
g. Heavy lifting and moving related to inventory management as well as the optimization of various workspaces.
h. Procuring materials and equipment for use in several different disciplines—most
commonly Foundations, Drawing, Sculpture and Painting.
I. Coordinating efforts with University staff and trades to meet the needs of the School of Art and Design including, but not limited to, large-scale moves, purging inventory, hazardous waste disposal, and general building maintenance. Additional duties may be assigned as needed.

1. Two years experience repairing hand and power tools
