Position Primary Purpose and General Responsibilities

VCU’s Facilities Management is seeking to hire a Project Manager within its Planning and Design unit. The Project Manager manages construction projects during the planning and design phase through bidding to ensure compliance with organizational objectives.

Among the responsibilities the Project Manager:

Manages projects so they meet schedule, budget, and program expectations
Solves problems by identifying and addressing root cause
Challenges consultants, users, resource personnel, and others to arrive at the most cost effective, functional and aesthetically pleasing result
Prepares complete and thorough work plans at the start of each project and tracks progress using work plans as a management tool
Identifies where input is needed from university personnel, actively pursues it and coordinates integration of it into the project
Verifies compliance with the Building Code
Highlights potential code issues for building team early in the design process to avoid schedule regression
Acts as primary liaison between the building team and the Division of Engineering and Buildings
Selects consultants whose skills are in alignment with User needs
Develops proposals and agreements such as RFPs, MOUs, owner/Architect contracts, change orders, invoices, requisitions with outside consultants and vendors
Demonstrates a commitment to risk assessment by considering cost, benefit and impact of decisions

Minimum Hiring Standards

Requires good working knowledge of construction products, materials, technology, and building systems.
Knowledge of construction means and methods.
Knowledge of state codes and standards
Skilled at using logic and reasoning to analyze and solve problems.
Excellent verbal and written communication
Strong negotiation skills.
Cost estimating ability and early project programming.
Virginia driver’s license required.
Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a staff member at VCU .

Preferred Hiring Standards

Licensed as an architect or engineer preferred
