Position Primary Purpose and General Responsibilities

VCU Facilities Management is seeking to hire an Assistant Director of University Renovations within the Construction Management unit.

VCU University Renovations is a sub-unit of Construction Management focused on active management of a wide range of mid to smaller magnitude construction projects. University Renovations is a fast-paced environment where a large volume of projects will be in varied states of progress at any one time. This position is the primary manager of VCU’s University Renovations unit responsible for overseeing critical unit resources and processes while personally managing select critical projects. This position is the primary manager of all University Renovations daily staff operations to include administrative, project management, and project inspection. Financial management and business operational decisions are key components of this position’s duties to ensure the Unit meets the needs of the University and individual clients effectively. Customer relations is a critical aspect of this position in communicating and resolving varied project scenarios and expectations as well as ensuring proper communication through all reporting levels. In addition to customer relations, this position negotiates equitable solutions with contractors, architects, engineers, and other stakeholders. This position strives to lead the University Renovations unit in providing great service and client experiences through quality construction management.

Minimum Hiring Standards

This position requires extensive complex commercial construction management experience to include proficiency with project scheduling, negotiating contracts, and managing organizational and project budgets. Demonstrated ability to manage balanced operational budget and finances in a highly regulated environment. Above average written and oral communication skills and ability to draft project scopes and prepare bid documentation. Effective supervisory and personnel management skills.

Ability to accomplish multiple tasks concurrently with minimal supervision.
Strong proficiency with electronic construction management software and technologies. An equivalent combination of education, training and experience in building construction “means and methods” and construction estimating required. Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a staff member at VCU .
Virginia Driver’s License.

Preferred Hiring Standards

Ability to accurately interpret and communicate CPM schedules.
Proficient knowledge of State of Virginia Construction and Professional Services Procurement.
Proficient knowledge of State of Virginia – CO-7 Construction General Terms and Conditions.
Proficient with virtual and remote operation technologies.
