Position Primary Purpose and General Responsibilities

The Division of Strategic Enrollment Management and Student Success ( SEMSS ) ensures academic quality and supports student success, which is dependent upon the recruitment, retention and timely graduation of a talented and diverse student body. Reporting to the Senior Assistant Director for Quality Assurance and Compliance, the Financial Analyst will ensure the department’s projected balances used within financial aid packaging operate within a fiscally sustainable manner by reviewing incoming freshman yield and reviewing enrolled student retention data.

Maintain and submit timely reports, provide accurate financial aid data in accordance with University and SEMSS Finance policies and procedures. The position will effectively translate and communicate complex information to a diverse group of stakeholders.

Responsibilities include financial aid modeling and leveraging, reconciliation and budget management, financial analysis, and ensuring programmatic reporting requirements (monthly, quarterly, bi-yearly or yearly reports) are completed according to sponsor or federal requirements and timeframes.

This position performs budget versus actual reconciliation of financial aid programs, maintains funding overviews/forecasts on a regular basis, create, analyze and maintain financial spreadsheets, and reviews variances for inconsistencies or account irregularities, develops/runs ad hoc queries, reviews Banner student information system data, reviews information from the data warehouse, and the Navigate student success system.

The Financial Analyst will collaborate with other VCU partner offices such as Institutional Research and Decision Support, Student Financial Management Center, Student Accounting, Offices of Admissions, School of Medicine, School of Dental Medicine, Office of Athletics, and Academic Advising regarding financial aid programs relevant to their areas and student populations.

Minimum Hiring Standards

-Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, business, management, information systems or public administration.
-At least 3 years’ experience in a related position with fiscal responsibilities.
-Accounting experience, including demonstrated experience analyzing financial distributions reports, managing end of month financial reports and budget reconciliations, and suggesting potential solutions to the issues being analyzed.
-Demonstrated ability to independently problem-solve using sound judgment and professional discretion.
-Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
-Ability to effectively communicate with a diverse population of students, faculty, and staff at varying administrative levels within the university.
-Ability to respond to requests with a professional and positive demeanor; the desire to create a positive and enthusiastic environment at SEMSS .
-Ability to maintain confidentiality related to sensitive data and discussions.
-Ability to work both independently and as a contributing member of a team.
-Ability and desire to take initiative in order to refine processes, interpret policy, and ensure positive outcomes.
-Excellent organizational skills and high attention to detail.
-Ability to function well in a complex, fast paced, multi-task work environment that regularly includes a variety of projects with multiple deadlines.
-Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, especially Excel.
-Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a staff member at VCU .

Preferred Hiring Standards

-Master’s degree in accounting, finance, business, management, information systems, public administration, or related field.
-Experience in creating and testing internal controls ( ARMICS ).
-Demonstrated experience in financial roles with progressive increasing responsibility.
-Intermediate to advanced knowledge of Microsoft Excel.
-Ability to write queries.
