English as a Second Language (ESL), Defense Critical Language and Culture Program (DCLCP)

The English as a Second Language (ESL) Instructor serves as a training and academic specialist. They support both the foreign language teaching team and provide formal English training to U.S. government personnel who do not speak English as a first language and those who speak English but who will benefit from learning and applying the formal grammar terminology needed in the second language classroom. This instructor serves as a model teacher, a trainer for other team members in the latest techniques and developments in the field of language education, and as an architect of instructional materials development and modification.

The position is located at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, in Missoula, Montana, or other location dependent upon mission requirements or at the request of our customers or as determined by the DCLCP Director. Due to instruction conducted at multiple training sites, some travel may be required.

Specific duties for this position include:

Curriculum Development (40%)

  • Develops new materials and supplements, revises, and adapts core course materials and instructional strategies.
  • Designs teaching plans and schedules.
  • Arranges English grammar sequences to meet the specific grammar introductions in each of the target foreign languages.
  • Discusses, explains, and teaches language acquisition principles.
  • Stays abreast of current research and theories in the field of Teaching of English as a Second Language (TESOL) and foreign language education
  • Consistently employs new ways of integrating advanced educational technology and other instructional innovations into the curriculum.

Teaching (30%)

  • Participates in the establishment of term and lesson learning objectives, and contributes to the development of English course content.
  • Advises Language Division Chief on the optimal organization, sequencing, and conduct of instruction to accomplish training objectives for English language competency.
  • Conducts large group, small group, and individual classroom instruction.
  • Applies state-of-the-art teaching approaches and techniques and is innovative with new pedagogical approaches based on learner needs.

Student and Program Evaluation (30%)

  • Develops, adapts, revises, and conducts English assessments.
  • Analyzes student test performance and provides both formative and summative feedback; prepares and updates individual records.
  • Counsels students and recommends special strategies or out-of-class work to remedy diagnosed areas of weakness.
  • Documents identified student learning problems, academic or administrative actions, and record steps taken to provide remediation.

Performs other duties as assigned, to include:

  • Ensures effective communication and collaboration within the department.
  • Completes assigned tasks from the supported customer and from the DCLCP Manager of Academic Programs (MAP) in a timely manner.
  • Conducts weekly meetings with language faculty and attends DCLCP weekly and other meetings as needed.
  • Collaborates with the DCLCP Manager of Academic Programs (MAP) on requirements for course accreditation submission.

Due to instruction being conducted at multiple training sites, some travel may be required for instructors.

Required Qualifications
  • Master’s Degree in a related field
  • Be fluent in English and have a strong background in the theories and practice of Teaching of English as a Second Language (TESOL) and foreign language education.
  • Understand current teaching methodologies and be comfortable with teaching through technology using Video-Teleconferencing (VTCs), Smartboards, and iPads.
  • Be able to work productively in a group (team teaching, active coordination, extensive collaboration) and effectively in an independent mode.
  • Must have experience in instructing English and in the theories and practice of Teaching of English as a Second Language (TESOL) and foreign language education.
  • Must have practical knowledge of adult learning processes, second language acquisition theories, linguistics, transformational grammar and analytical methods.
  • Must have experience in curriculum development for English language materials.
  • Must be able to develop curricula and syllabi based on the needs of the program and as required by the Department of Defense (DoD).
  • Must possess adroit observational skills and be capable of offering fresh, creative solutions in difficult situations.
  • Must have knowledge of current teaching methodologies and practices in the classroom and experience utilizing advanced classroom technologies.
  • Must be able to work productively within a team and independently.
  • Must have excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Individual must be able to pass a Criminal Background Investigation.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Ph.D. in relevant field
  • Experience in intensive language instruction, particularly in a military or government setting.
About the Defense Critical Language/Culture Program (DCLCP) at the Mansfield Center

The Defense Critical Language/Culture Program (DCLCP) at the Mansfield Center develops and presents comprehensive language and regional studies/cultural awareness courses, courseware, and supporting materials designed to prepare DOD and USG employees for overseas deployment. These courses and materials will be specifically designed to meet DoD requirements, and may include, but not be limited to, languages such as Chinese, Arabic, Dari, Persian, Indonesian, French, Russian, Pashto, and Korean. Additionally, these courses and materials will include a substantial regional and cultural studies component. DCLCP will also develop synchronous online learning modules and Apple Apps for language and culture instruction in coordination with Department of Defense (DoD) entities.
