General Summary/Purpose:

Under general supervision, performs clinical and/or research laboratory experiments by following established procedures and protocols or with instruction. Under minimal supervision, performs research experiments on mouse and human research projects in a Bio Safety Level 2 setting. Uses basic science knowledge to learn techniques/methods of the lab. Using established procedures and protocols, performs experiments which may include: mouse handling techniques including in vivo injections, skin grafting, peripheral blood collection, and tissue harvesting; animal husbandry including phenotyping/genotyping transgenic mouse strains; multi-parameter flow cytometry; cell culture; DNA and RNA extractions; and data analysis. Flow cytometry and tissue culture of human peripheral blood cells may also be performed. The individual will participate in the planning of experiments and interpreting of results. Understands the role of senior lab members and accepts constructive guidance. Follows established procedures and protocols utilizing appropriate techniques to perform laboratory tests and/or experiments.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Follows established protocols and utilizes aseptic technique to perform laboratory experiments.
  • Documents and reports test results. Completes required logs and supporting documents.
  • Manages mouse colony, including transgenic mouse strain breeding, ordering of mice from commercial vendors, and attending to time-sensitive issues that arise with Research Animal Resources staff. Monitors breeding and weaning of new litters, keeps accurate electronic records. Genotypes new litters at appropriate age using PCR and/or flow cytometry.
  • Exchanges routine information in an appropriate manner requiring good oral and written communication. Regular interaction with trainees, research staff, vendors, and faculty members. Identifies and resolves common problems and uses analytical skills to implement assigned projects.
  • Operates and maintains basic laboratory equipment such as microscopes.
  • General laboratory upkeep for cleanliness and safety.
  • Responsible for routine operational activities such as ordering supplies and materials, reviewing inventory, maintaining up to date records of tests, etc., and preventive maintenance of equipment.
  • Performs miscellaneous related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications (mandatory):

  • Bachelor’s degree in biological sciences, chemistry, or related field.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of good lab practices.
  • Experience with mouse handling and/or husbandry is preferred.
  • Experience with multi-parameter flow cytometry is preferred

Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Goodoral and written communication skills.
  • Musthave excellent organizational skills.
  • Ability to work independently, as well as part of a team.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Excel.

Equipment, Machine, or Tool Requirements:

  • Computerand laboratory equipment such as microscopes, BSC, RT-PCR machines, centrifuges, incubators, flow cytometers, automated cell counter, ultra low-temperature freezers and liquid nitrogen tanks.
  • Software applications such as Excel and PowerPoint.

This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
