Truman College is seeking two (2) Reading Clinicians to join our Academic Support team. Reporting to the Director of Academic Support Services, the Reading Clinician develops intervention plans and coaches students through reading challenges, as relevant to a variety of academic disciplines, with the objective of helping students: 1) become better academic readers; 2) develop critical reading and thinking strategies; 3) establish effective study skills, including note-taking, time-management, and memorization techniques; and 4) understand the reading/writing connection in the academic environment.

The Reading Clinician responsibilities also include assessing students’ reading skills, diagnoses of reading deficiencies and working with faculty and staff to help improve their ability to effectively support students in improving their college-level reading.
Work assignments vary in order to meet the unique literacy needs of students within different campus environments. Position requires flexibility in supporting students and faculty through consultation, assessment, professional development, and implementation of intervention strategies.

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Researches intervention strategies for particular cognitive issues (dyslexia, visual discrimination difficulties, memory difficulties) and advises implementation of effective activities and approaches.
  • Assists students in applying reading strategies to better understand subject matter, improve critical thinking, and develop self-confidence and a high level of motivation when reading academic texts.
  • Assesses each assigned student’s level, skills, and attitude about reading and sets goals for tutoring sessions. Tutors students in 1-on-1 or small group sessions.
  • Provides evaluations and other reports to faculty and administration as required.
  • Collaborates with faculty to help students effectively navigate academic texts by employing critical reading strategies.
  • Develops ancillary materials, including informational and marketing materials, such as flyers, slide presentations, website copy, and talking points, as appropriate to the job.
  • Collaborates with other Academic Support Centers to create interdisciplinary lesson plans and instructional materials.
  • Collaborates with the Truman Writing and Reading Center which serves as the central reading hub for the district.
  • Collaborates in the development of the departmental CRTs for Foundational Studies in Literacy and ARC.
  • Assesses and measures texts in terms of readability, cultural content, and subject matter complexity upon request.
  • Collects and catalogues online resources for independent student use.
  • Recommends appropriate reading materials for class book clubs/literature circles
  • Assists Academic Support Directors and Coordinators with data analysis and grant reporting
  • Attends and provides periodic training sessions to increase competency in working with students, using techniques based on data-driven evidence and reading research
  • Administers diagnostic testing and develops interventions plans to share with consultants for use with students.
  • Develops ancillary materials, including informational and marketing materials, such as flyers, slide presentations, website copy, and talking points, as appropriate to the job.
  • Performs other duties as assigned


QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master’s degree from an accredited college or university in Reading, Literacy, or Curriculum and Instruction with an emphasis in Reading or Literacy, or a related field with an emphasis in literacy.
  • Consideration given to candidates with a Master’s degree in an unrelated field with state certification in Reading or Literacy
  • Bilingual (Spanish/English) preferred
  • One or more years of work experience as a reading/literacy instructor, coach, or tutor
  • Experience working with diverse populations of adult learners with varying needs
  • Knowledge of reading strategies and interventions
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Ability to work with a diverse population of students, faculty, and staff
  • Ability to work remotely with internet access
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)


Chicago residency is required for all full-time employees within 6 months of hire.
