Position Summary:

The Vice Chair for Research (VCR) in the Department of Anesthesiology at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health (UW-SMPH) is responsible for oversight of all research activity in the department. This individual will guide research program development and provide support for all ongoing research projects and research personnel. Mentoring of trainees and junior faculty will be a high priority. The VCR will be expected to maintain their own successful research program. Applicants may also provide clinical services at one or more of the patient care areas served by UW Health.

Principal Duties:

- Leadership. The VCR will be responsible for developing and implementing a long-term strategic direction for the basic, clinical, and translational research programs in the department with input and collaboration from the faculty and Chair of the Department. This includes efforts to promote and enhance research collaboration and the development of team research projects. They will lead efforts for hiring faculty and trainees who are interested in pursuing research that contributes to our strategic plan. They will ensure that financial support, space, and other resources are available to our current research groups, as well as our future new hires, by coordinating assistance from our department, the UW School of Medicine and Public Health, and the Graduate School. They will serve as chair of the departmental Research & Development (R&D) committee. They will provide oversight for departmental research managers and administrators, and for pre- and post-award processing of external grant funding; manage our internal R&D funds and assure satisfactory progress of funded research projects; and help advance nominations of department members for internal and external research awards.

- Teaching and Mentoring. The VCR will provide instruction, mentoring, and support for faculty, fellows, residents, and students who are interested and/or involved in research. Educational opportunities may include didactic teaching in the department, the medical school, and the graduate school.

- Research. The VCR will be provided time and resources to pursue their own research interests. The successful candidate will be awarded the Bamforth Research Distinguished Chair in Anesthesiology.

- Clinical Service. Applicants will be given the opportunity, and in many cases expected to provide clinical service in their area of specialization. The department staffs several UW Health locations that care for patients undergoing inpatient and outpatient surgeries of all types, in both adult and pediatric populations, as well as critical care and chronic pain.

Degree and Area of Specialization:

Applicants should hold either M.D., D.O., or their equivalents. Area of research interest should be in a field related to anesthesiology or perioperative medicine.

Minimum Years and Type of Relevant Work Experience:

Candidates for the position of Vice Chair for Research should be successful scientists with an established research program. They should have a well-established relationship with the anesthesiology research community and a history of service on research committees of the American Society of Anesthesiologists or other national or international research organizations. Candidates must demonstrate a history of leadership and successful mentoring of trainees and junior faculty in research.

Applicants must have experience running successful basic science, clinical science, and/or translational research programs in areas relevant to the field of anesthesiology or perioperative medicine. They should demonstrate a strong history of publications in well-respected peer-reviewed journals and have an established record of ongoing research funding.

License or Certificate:

Applicants should hold or be eligible for a Wisconsin medical license, and be American Board of Anesthesiology certified or eligible.

Additional Information:

This position will be a dual appointment with UW-Madison and the UW Medical Foundation.

This vacancy is being announced simultaneously with job # 229500; please note that only one
vacancy exists. Having two job postings allows the School of Medicine and Public Health, Department of Anesthesiology to consider candidates with both tenure-track faculty credentials and non-tenure-track faculty credentials for this position. This position of Vice Chair for Research (VCR) may be either tenure track or Clinical Health Sciences (CHS) track. Candidates for Associate Professor or Professor in the tenure track must meet the requirements for appointment at rank per UW-SMPH and UW-Madison guidelines.

Candidates for Associate Professor or Professor in the Clinical Health Sciences (CHS) track must meet criteria for appointment at rank per UW-SMPH guidelines.
