Summary/Objective

The Assistant Director, Graduate Admissions participates actively in the recruitment and selection of prospective students for the Washington College of Law’s six post-J.D. LL.M and SJD programs. In conjunction with the Director, the Assistant Director is responsible for all facets of graduate admissions, including applicant advisement and outreach. The position is also responsible for day-to-day communication with prospective and admitted students, and participates in admission decisions and the financial aid determination and review process. The Assistant Director interacts regularly with university and law school administrative and program offices, foreign visitors and organizations, peer domestic institutions, foreign universities, and other legal education stakeholders.

Essential Functions

1. Recruitment & Outreach: serves as the primary point of contact for prospective students in the post-J.D. LL.M and SJD programs. Manage the planning and execution of multiple recruitment and yield events, including graduate information sessions, online webinars, on campus open houses, and both on and off-campus admitted student events. Represents WCL by attending recruiting events, panels, and information sessions with prospective students and applicants. Travels on behalf of WCL for recruitment and enrollment related events, both domestically and internationally. Maintains relationships with peer domestic institutions and foreign universities. Develops admissions brochures, letters, forms, social media content and other materials; Monitors the Office of Graduate Admissions’ web pages related to admission, recruitment, financial aid, and exchange/dual degree programs, working to continually maintain accuracy, build content, and improve the user-friendliness of the site to applicants. Develops content for and records 30-40 online informational webinars per year. Recruits students.

2. Admissions & Onboarding: provides admissions and intake advice to prospective applicants and incoming students. Reviews all admissions files for the law school’s nine LL.M. and SJD programs, and participates in making decisions and recommendations on the admissibility of applicants to these programs. Provides detailed analyses of the academic credentials of applicants in order to evaluate applicants’ academic merit. Interacts with and monitors progress of admitted students to convert them to enrolled status through one-on-one communication, admitted student materials and correspondence, and conversion events. Coordinates and helps plan the New Student Orientation Program each semester that introduces new LL.M. students to various staff in their respective programs. Provides academic, housing, and financial aid and scholarship counseling to applicants and incoming students.

3. Enrollment: provides in-depth analyses of enrollment data to determine areas of potential recruitment and admissions growth and outreach opportunities. Track and analyze generated leads through admissions pipeline to report return on investment of recruitment efforts. Use data to contribute to future recruitment and yield event planning.

4. Financial Aid: under the supervision of the Admissions Director, reviews requests for financial assistance, including applications for tuition remission, research grants, and program scholarships; assesses financial assistance applications for financial need and academic merit; and participates in decision-making on all of these forms of financial assistance for applicants. Communicates awards to students via email, phone, and interviews, and liaises with the WCL Office of Financial Aid concerning students’ award.

5. Operations: maintains a database for all LL.M. and SJD applicants; corresponds with applicants via phone, email, and in-person interviews; and communicates regularly regarding admission and financial aid decisions. Serves as the main liaison for the Office of Graduate Admissions with the International Scholars and Student Services Office. Reviews requests for immigration documents from applicants from more than 50 different countries. Processes and admits incoming Exchange Program applications and works with the Office of Student Accounts on billing issues for incoming students.

Work Environment
  • Must be available to travel overseas during the fall and spring semesters. Other domestic travel may be required during fall and spring semesters.

Required Education and Experience
  • Bachelor's degree
  • 3-5 years of relevant experience


Preferred Education and Experience
  • Master's degree or equivalent
  • Experience working in an office at an institution of higher education preferred
  • Evidence of intercultural experience, ability to work and communicate with students and professionals from diverse legal and cultural backgrounds, and a second language highly desirable.

  • Knowledge of and experience in admissions, as shown by a successful track record of progressively more responsible work in this field
  • Knowledge of LL.M programs or equivalent experience
  • Self-direction and the ability to work with minimal supervision

  • Excellent communications abilities, both orally and in writing
  • Familiarity with F-1 and J-1 visa regulations
  • Experience with the Law School Admissions Council’s ACES 2 Database preferred
  • Experience working with a CRM preferred
  • Experience with Salesforce Marketing Cloud preferred
  • Strong computer and web experience
