    Department Summary
    Information Services (IS) is the central information technology unit at the University of Oregon and provides wide ranging services to campus. Information Services consists of four major functional areas: Customer Experience, which serves as the key contact point for interactions with campus clients and customers; Applications & Middleware, which manages and supports applications, integration services, identity management and data management; Information Security, which helps protect virtual or physical information; and Technology Infrastructure, which provides administration and support for the software, hardware, and services needed to support the campus IT environment. Information Services also includes the Advanced Network Technology Center. IS works closely with the Network for Education and Research in Oregon.

    Position Summary
    Reporting to the Vice Provost/Chief Information Officer, the ACIO is directly responsible for providing leadership and direction to the Technology Infrastructure group within Information Services supplying design/architecture, installation, maintenance, operation, and support for the University's enterprise systems; data center operations; data, voice, and video network; and telecommunications infrastructure. The ACIO is also directly responsible for research computing services within IS, including high performance computing. The ACIO will assume overall responsibility for developing and maintaining the technology infrastructure roadmap for ensuring a high-quality infrastructure for faculty, staff, and students. The ACIO will provide a continuous commitment to improving customer service and assuring that information technology on campus is attuned to faculty, staff, and students' technology needs. In addition, the incumbent provides vision, leadership, and planning to assure that services are effectively and appropriately delivered to meet the diverse and dynamic needs of the University of Oregon. In collaboration with internal and external campus stakeholders, the ACIO develops and implements plans for the operating needs of technology on campus, including annual and long-term plans for budget, personnel, and space.

    The ACIO, in close collaboration with faculty and advisory groups, will continue to build a new phase for research computing through continual innovations in the campus' cyberinfrastructure (CI), participating in national industry organizations, and collaborating with colleagues across the nation on federal research activities.

    The ACIO will serve as a member of the Virtual Chief Technology Officer team. The vCTO group, comprised of the ACIO for Technology Infrastructure, the Chief Information Security Officer, and the ACIO for Applications and Middleware, provides vision, leadership, strategic planning and oversight for information technology throughout all functions and locations of the University of Oregon. The vCTO group is responsible for establishing current and long-range direction of technology aimed at keeping the organization on the forefront of change. The ACIO for Technology Infrastructure will have a high level of technical knowledge and work collegially in the vCTO group in the development of innovative technology solutions. This leader will have a clear vision of the comprehensive role of information technology in higher education including academic programs, administrative functions, and student services. The incumbent will have the ability to create synergy and increase effectiveness by merging the various technology efforts across campus into a highly functioning center of service.

    Together with other members of the vCTO, The ACIO will build a shared vision for meaningful and effective uses of technology architecture and develop and implement strategies to accomplish that vision and meet university strategic goals. In addition, the vCTO is responsible for leading strategic planning regarding IT architecture strategy, design, development, deployment, support, and enhancement of the university's technology. The vCTO group will work closely as well as collaboratively with members of the IT community within UO to streamline processes, integrate/merge technology, and create and innovate and cost-effective ways to leverage IT on campus.

    The ACIO serves on the Information Services Leadership Team and leads Technology Infrastructure employees, including those potentially represented by a bargaining unit. The ACIO has University-wide impact, making decisions about what services will be offered, and the expansion, improvement, and evolution of those services; sets technical directions and standards; and makes a full range of personnel and financial decisions. The ACIO will collaborate frequently with the Information Services Leadership Team regarding projects, policies, technology, strategic planning, and university technology architecture. The ACIO has budget authority over the Technology Infrastructure Group.

    Essential Personnel
    This position may provide essential services during times of emergencies and inclement weather. This position may be required to fulfill essential services and functions during these times.

    Minimum Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent years of experience
  • Seven years of IT experience with an emphasis on IT infrastructure
  • Five years of leadership experience providing supervision, coaching, and mentoring to information technology professionals
  • Demonstrated prior experience supporting technology infrastructure services in a complex environment including research computing
  • Experience in managing as well as negotiating vendor contracts and agreements with end users, service providers, and regulatory agencies

    Preferred Qualifications
  • Advanced degree
  • Experience working in IT within higher education
  • Demonstrated experience with developing and maintaining short- and long-term plans and budgets for technology infrastructure in a higher education environment
  • Demonstrated success in participating in cyberinfrastructure awards funded through federal agencies
  • Deep understanding of computing and data services in support of the research enterprise locally and nationally
  • Understanding of how to communicate the value and direction of research IT to campus stakeholders, in research and in the use of the campus CI in teaching
  • Proven knowledge and ability to maintain currency of emerging national CI issues related to goals and priorities of the university
  • Experience with ITIL or ITSM
  • Experience leading and managing technology infrastructure services in a medium/large research university or similar environment, including high performance computing and research technology services
  • Experience developing technology strategies related to cloud services, virtualization, and network architecture
  • Experience with unified communications technologies/projects in a large organization
  • Proven experience in developing a vision, roadmap, and successful technology framework
