Department Summary
The Knight Campus for Accelerating Scientific Impact (Knight Campus) is a $1 billion initiative designed to fast-track scientific discoveries into innovations that improve the quality of life for people in Oregon, the nation, and beyond. The Knight Campus will reshape the higher education landscape in Oregon by training the next generation of scientists, forging tighter ties with industry and entrepreneurs, and creating new educational opportunities for graduate and undergraduate students.

The Knight Campus Graduate Internship Program (KCGIP) trains students in the real-world knowledge and skills necessary to be successful in the industrial research laboratory - and at the interview table. The KCGIP provides high-quality, experiential instruction in market-engaged, applied-science programs and facilitates student placement in 9-month paid internships in industrial, national lab and academic settings. The program currently has tracks focused in materials science and quantitative life science.

Position Summary
The Senior Manager of Alumni and Corporate Engagement plays a critical role in the overall success of the KCGIP. With the 1st- and 5th- largest master's programs in physics and chemistry in the nation, the Senior Manager oversees the cultivation of a large alumni (700+ individuals) and corporate base (800+ individuals) for materials science-focused tracks. These relationships bring both short- and long-term benefits to the KCGIP, Knight Campus, and the UO. The Senior Manager will leverage the multiple facets of this role to implement a systems-based approach (which considers how relationships are connected and influenced by one another) and will simultaneously grow corporate and alumni relationships while contributing to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives and adding value to the broader Knight Campus and UO ecosystem.

The primary and interconnected areas of this role will be alumni engagement, corporate engagement, and DEI strategic planning. Throughout this work, the Senior Manager will engage with campus stakeholders to identify opportunities for collaboration in each of these areas.

Responsibilities will include:
  • Corporate Partner Engagement. Develop and execute strategies which allow the program to grow and strengthen the number of engaged corporate partners who host interns or support the program through other initiatives. Many corporate partners may also be program alumni.
  • Alumni Engagement. Develop and execute strategies that allow the program to build deep alumni relationships which may be leveraged for multiple facets that benefit the program (e.g., student recruitment from undergrad institutions, ambassadors within their workplace for hiring alumni and interns, identification of DEI guest speakers).
  • DEI Planning. Ensuring key milestones are met for DEI efforts (e.g., student representation, professional training). Leverage relationships with corporate partners, alumni, and campus stakeholders to achieve shared goals.

    Minimum Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in communications, public relations, journalism, or physical sciences; OR an equivalent combination of skills and experience.
  • Five years of experience in relationship management, recruitment, sales, or customer service.
  • Three years of experience in DEI training or outreach initiatives.

    Professional Competencies
  • Demonstrated knowledge of strategic planning in the area of relationship development/growth.
  • Knowledge of best practices in relationship management.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in both formal and informal channels; interpersonal and public relations skills.
  • Ability to represent the organization in a professional manner, recruit and work within a diverse community, and follow all university policies and procedures.
  • Demonstrated organizational, time management, multi-tasking, and planning capabilities.
  • Computer skills including proficiency with Adobe Creative Suite, Canvas, Microsoft Office Suite, and the ability to learn new systems quickly.

    Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with the design or identification of marketing materials targeted at scientific audiences.
  • Three years of experience cultivating industrial relationships within the fields of materials science.
