    Department Summary
    University Advancement (UA) supports the University of Oregon's (UO) mission of providing exceptional teaching, discovery, and service by strategically positioning the university to create awareness, build long-term relationships, and secure resources that increase understanding and further its aims. The division consists of approximately 200 employees primarily working out of Eugene, with offices in Portland and Bend. Departments within University Advancement include: the UO Alumni Association; Development; Advancement Operations; Federal Affairs; and State and Community Affairs.     Position Summary
    The Associate Vice President is a strategic leader with the ability to envision, implement, and steward a thoughtful approach to regional strategy in the Portland metro area. Working in coordination with the Senior Associate Vice President for Development, this position directly supervises engagement and development staff focused on the Portland region and serves as a strategic leader of all advancement staff based in Portland.

    The Associate Vice President is responsible for establishing, launching, and improving the University of Oregon's relationships with alumni, friends, and corporations in Portland. This leader helps to position the University of Oregon as an economic and social force in Portland and beyond through recruiting volunteers, managing donor relationships, and fostering community connection. This leader is also responsible for building and sustaining a healthy, inclusive culture amongst University Advancement staff in Portland, advancing equity, encouraging collaboration across silos, identifying and encouraging opportunities for innovation, and mentoring and coaching staff.

    Minimum Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education, training, and work experience suitable for the position.
  • Fifteen years progressively responsible major gift experience, including the successful close of several seven figure gifts or equivalent gifts of significance to an organization.
  • Ten years management experience of a team, including three years of management of frontline fundraisers.
  • Ten years of experience working in the Portland, OR non-profit sector, with a proven ability to build community and align stakeholders in that locale.

  • Professionalism and citizenship: Strong leadership skills and executive presence, including the ability to regularly mentor and steward a broader team towards success. Ability to lead task forces and organizational maturation initiatives. Inclination to regularly provide learning opportunities and resources for growing and high-potential team members.
  • Institutional navigation and industry knowledge: High level of programmatic and institutional knowledge, with the ability to take a leadership role in using past successes and failures to inform new strategies. Ability to maintain strong partnerships with on- and off-campus partners to create and sell the narrative of new programs and initiatives. Ability to articulate strategic plan in the context of positioning the institution in comparison to aspirant peers.
  • Management and supervision of employees: Demonstrated ability managing a successful team that allows individual team members opportunities for professional growth, including setting integrated metrics for all employees, inspiring performance and engagement for the team, and empowering them to proactively partner with senior staff and campus affiliates. Ability to manage other managers and train upcoming leadership.
  • Strategic planning: Ability to provide leadership in advancement-wide discussions of new initiatives, capital project planning, strategic staffing, and 3-5 year trends in the industry. Ability to communicate and articulate how individual initiatives, programmatic direction, and overall advancement strategy will shape the university. Leadership in aligning alumni engagement, annual philanthropy, central development and units with regard to goals, donor strategy, and communication.
  • Ability to interact, communicate, and work effectively with individuals, recognizing and respecting the many and varied identities of each person.
  • Commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity, equity, and inclusion.

    Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in building a regional strategy for higher education fundraising.
  • Experience in leading collaborative programs across development and alumni engagement initiatives.
  • Familiarity with the University of Oregon, its programs, and the Portland Initiative.
  • Experience leading or partnering on transformational development/community engagement initiatives aimed at equity and diversity.
