    Department Summary
    The Office of Strategic Communications and Marketing within the Division of Student Services Enrollment Management has responsibility for all communications with prospective students, current students, parents and families of current and prospective students, as well as alumni, donors and potential donors, and other target audiences for the purposes of student recruitment and retention. The Assistant Director uses innovative strategies to contribute to the attainment of the Division of Student Services and Enrollment Management's and the Division of Student Life's short- and long-term goals, including enrollment, retention, community building, and development efforts for a variety of audiences.

    Position Summary
    The Assistant Director for Strategic Communications and Marketing manages the division's copy writing and media relations functions and provides leadership to the strategic communication and marketing team. The position is responsible for overseeing content creation that communicates our core values and mission as demonstrated through departments, programs, services to students, faculty, staff, parents, and the community, and is expected to promote a consistent, recognizable, and positive university and division image, and maintain and support university and division-wide policies and procedures related to strategic communications, marketing, and media strategies. This position will ensure that the efforts are promoted and coordinated with departments, University Communications, and other university-wide communicators.

    The position reports to the Associate Director of Strategic Communication and Marketing in Student Services and Enrollment Management. Due to the nature of the work of the Vice President's office, this position will be aware of and need to be able to communicate about, as directed, division and university leadership's viewpoints on strategies, negotiations, responses, and other matters around the Vice President's office, SEIU collective bargaining issues, Title IX issues, and the work of the University of Oregon Board of Trustees.

    This position will work with high-impact clients and sensitive and confidential information frequently. This position will be expected to exercise discretion and decision making depending on the special goals of an assignment or situation.

    Minimum Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in journalism, communications, English, writing, public relations, or related discipline or five year of experience working in the areas of communications, marketing, or public relations
  • Four years of professional experience as a communications professional for an organization which involved gathering information, writing and producing materials, presenting information to the public, and handling communications, marketing, or public relations, with an emphasis on writing and editing

    Professional Competencies
  • Excellent writing skills and copy-editing skills
  • Demonstrated success in brand journalism and digital storytelling, in ways that engage and capture the attention of the target audience
  • Demonstrated experience with and/or commitment to working effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds and cultures
  • Demonstrated success working in a team environment and as a supervisor
  • Excellent interpersonal and oral communication skills
  • Proven ability to work cooperatively with individuals including staff, volunteers, parents, and students, in a service-oriented environment
  • Familiarity with the Chicago Manual of Style and Associated Press style
  • Ability to produce high-volume, high-quality work in a rapidly changing environment
  • Basic knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite

    Preferred Qualifications
  • Project management and client management experience
  • Experience writing and editing in higher education
  • One year of experience working with media and/or writing for media
  • Experience in leveraging social media and online communications
