Blackburn College, a unique four-year liberal arts college with a student-managed work program located in Carlinville, IL, seeks applications for a tenure-track, faculty position in Sport Management within the Physical Education and Sport Management department staring in the fall of 2021.  Blackburn College does not have faculty rank, and both recent graduates and experienced candidates are welcome to apply.  Those able to teach across the breadth of the discipline as well as teach within the related K-12 Physical Education major are especially encouraged to apply.

Successful candidates must hold a minimum of a Master’s degree (Ph.D. preferred) in Sport Management or a closely related field and be strongly interested in teaching and student engagement. The teaching load is twelve credits each semester, and scholarship is encouraged and supported. Blackburn's unique work program enables the department to hire bright, motivated students to work as teaching assistants, graders, and student researchers. Additionally, all seniors complete a capstone overseen by department faculty.

Applicants should send the following to hr@blackburn.edu:

  • A letter of interest discussing your qualifications and how your professional experience or research will contribute to a small department
  • A statement of teaching philosophy, which should address what diversity means for you and why it is important
  • A curriculum vitae
  • Contact information for at least three professional references, with at least one reference able to speak to your teaching ability.

Review of application materials will begin immediately; however, all applications received by April 30, 2021 will receive full consideration.  Applications will be accepted until the positions are filled. The successful applicant must provide proof of authorization to work in the United States; Blackburn is not able to sponsor work visas. Blackburn College is an Equal Opportunity Employer and seeks to build an inclusive community that can engage the interests of a diverse population.  We are committed to fostering, cultivating, and sustaining a culture that reflects the diversity of our country, and as such, we particularly encourage applications from members of underrepresented groups such as women, people of color, LGBTQ+, veterans, and those with disabilities.

Blackburn College, one of eight work colleges in the U.S., is the only college with a student-managed work program. For over 100 years, students have earned a tuition discount by participating in all aspects of running Blackburn. The work requirement for all students provides an affordable education, meaningful work experience and leadership opportunities. The stimulating teaching and learning environment, coupled with the experience and leadership gained through the Work Program, results in an average of 98% of graduates in full-time employment or graduate school within six months of graduation, based on an average 96% survey response rate.

Blackburn College is located in Carlinville, Illinois, a small rural community between Springfield, IL and St. Louis, MO. The college enjoys a very positive relationship with the community. Carlinville has been called one of the “Best Small Towns in America” and is the seat of Macoupin County. Carlinville offers small-town America, with brick streets around the town square, many parks, and historical homes and buildings, while being within an easy drive of the urban center of St. Louis, Missouri.
