Reporting to the Dean of University College, a Director of Diversity and Inclusive Excellence is required to lead, develop, and implement strategies to align Syracuse University Global’s mission and bring equity, inclusion and diversity into the organization’s strategic planning process and academic initiatives.

Qualifications

• Ph.D. required ( ABD candidates with appropriate experience will be considered).

• Four (4) plus years of professional work, research, teaching and/or experience in the field of diversity and inclusion, social justice advocacy and education, student development, student advising, student organization advising, and/or campus-wide programming.

• Additional professional training, education and certifications are strongly desired.

• Experience in higher education administration and foundations of cultural awareness, specifically in a university system, is highly desirable.

• Experience and demonstrated effectiveness leading diversity and inclusion related initiatives and programs is required.

• Excellent analytical and organizational skills.

• Excellent presentation and facilitation skills, dialogue circles and similar engagements is highly desirable.

• Strong interpersonal and written communication skills.

Job Specific Qualifications

• Knowledge of tracking and recording methods to inform institutional change and skill in developing vision and strategies that inspire others.

• Demonstrated knowledge of how to structure programs to best serve non-/post-traditional student educational goals while meeting federal and state legal requirements.

• Understanding of University policies and procedures, and associated policies, laws, and practices, including but not limited to knowledge of issues related to Title VII and equal employment opportunity, Americans with Disabilities Act, Title IX, Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs’ required Affirmative Action Plans.

• Demonstrated knowledge of how to lead diversity, inclusion, and organizational change initiatives.

• Team player with empathy, respect for others, a collaborative approach, and a sense of humor.

• Ability to respectfully lead and guide others, while also being a good listener who is open to new ideas.

• Understanding, sensitivity to, and respect for the diverse academic, socio-economic, ethnic, religious, and cultural backgrounds, disabilities and sexual orientation of students, faculty, administrators, and staff; fostering collaboration and consensus building.

Responsibilities

Leadership:
• Lead Syracuse University Global strategic equity, diversity, and inclusion initiatives.
• Partner with campus leaders, faculty, students, and staff to ensure programming supports Syracuse University values and strategic goals.
• Work closely with senior leaders and campus partners to advance a culture of diversity, equity, and inclusion by providing strategic planning and support for the recruitment, retention, and engagement of diverse Syracuse University Global faculty, students and staff.
• Act as a Global campus-wide ambassador for diversity, equity, and inclusion and work to engage and inspire members of the internal and external community by raising awareness and illustrating the importance of these principles.
• Lead the Syracuse University Global Diversity and Inclusion Committee; build synergy in programming and share best practices across the college and thereby throughout Syracuse University Global.
• Develop and share best practice in assessment, including the development of matrices for measuring equity, and inclusion awareness and competencies as it relates to job performance goals.

Training and Development:
• Provide strategic direction for training initiatives on cultural competency, racial diversity, gender differences, disability, building a climate of equity and inclusion, and other topics designed to increase awareness and support of equity and inclusion values, and maintaining compliance with applicable laws in collaboration with Syracuse University stakeholders.
• Develop and implement initiatives that build and support proactive, diverse, inclusive, and equitable practices.
• Provide support related to diversity, equity, and inclusion programming.
• Collaborate with departments throughout Syracuse University Global to leverage diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts.
• Administer diversity and inclusion policy and program development.
• Work with Human Resources to ensure appropriate integration of diversity, inclusion and equity goals.
• Consult with Syracuse University Title IX partners with to ensure that Syracuse University Global is in full compliance with required state and federal guidelines.

Engagement:
• Collaborate with Dean of the College of Professional Studies, Syracuse University Provost, and Human Resources to expand the diversity of the candidates for Syracuse University Global faculty and staff positions and student applicants, through outreach and recruitment.
• This role will consult and partner with University departments to advance efforts across the Syracuse University Global campus to provide a welcoming and affirming environment for all.
• Promote a culture of engagement and belonging by providing leadership in an environment that actively promotes diversity, equity, and inclusion and possess a deep commitment to these values and demonstrate action and accountability in advancing strategies to support them at all levels of the organization and University.
• Assist in prioritizing diversity and equity initiatives and communicate to the broader community to support and encourage actionable efforts that advance inclusiveness.
• Provide solutions to shared obstacles, coordinating resources, and sharing expertise in best practices.
• Design, develop, and champion initiatives that build, expand, and support inclusive employee and student populations collaboratively throughout Syracuse University Global while removing obstacles to achieve success in these areas.

Curriculum and Teaching:
• Accepted appointment as Assistant Teaching Professor with the College of Professional Studies.
• Lead and coordinate all Syracuse University Global efforts related to the University’s required first-year seminar.
• Align seminar curriculum with specified learning outcomes.
• Facilitate training and coordination of seminar instructors and associated student support efforts.
• Design, develop and teach curriculum and online, hybrid, and residential courses for non-/post-traditional students attending Syracuse University.
• Design teaching methodologies and materials, and training other faculty in instructional methods and design of courses informed by and grounded in values of diversity, inclusion and equity.
• Participate in routine service to the College and the University.
• Take an active role in the governance of the College faculty specific to diversity, inclusion and equity awareness, policies and protocols.

Reporting and Assessment:
• Establish and maintain survey and data collection processes, and an internal audit and reporting system to allow for effective measurement of diversity, inclusion and equity program outcomes.
• Assess and monitor program effectiveness and keeps college, campus and university leadership informed of equal opportunity progress and issues through periodic reports.
• Monitor metrics related to diversity, equity and inclusion.
• Ensure that ongoing, comprehensive, and research-based planning and assessment occurs, to include the establishment and review of goals and outcomes with the mission of the school, regular assessment of the accomplishment of goals and outcomes, timely completion of annual planning and assessment reports.
• Work with communications office to ensure continued visibility of diversity programming and initiatives.
