Brief Description of Duties

The School of Business and Public Administration at the University of the District of Columbia (UDC) is seeking a full-time, tenure-track Assistant or Associate Professor in Accounting. The successful candidate will be expected to design, develop, and teach a range of accounting courses in the School of Business and Public Administration (SBPA). We seek a candidate who will possess documented capability in teaching, scholarship, and service, and will be expected to foster the growth of first-rate accounting program, including building on existing strengths within the School and through collaboration with SBPA faculty. The ideal candidate must be a scholar and enthusiastic about working with students for addressing their needs in accounting.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Teach, research, and cross-disciplinary collaboration to contribute to our School to be well versed in teaching across accounting discipline and functions
  • Design and teach undergraduate and graduate level courses in accounting related courses
  • Conduct discipline-related research leading to peer reviewed publications
  • Assist with grants, special projects
  • Other duties as assigned


Minimum Job Requirements

  • A PhD/DBA or ABD (must complete by Summer 2021) in accounting from an AACSB or EQUIS accredited university.
  • U.S. citizen or permanent resident (Green Card)
  • Potential for excellence in discipline-related research, resulting in publication in peer reviewed accounting journals. Applicants should have demonstrable ability to publish scholarly research in leading journals and the ability to teach with rigor and effectiveness.
  • Prior academic experience in a business school environment, work experience in accounting or a related area and potential for excellence in building and teaching accounting courses.
  • A demonstrated work ethic that promotes teamwork, enhances creativity and motivation, and builds consensus in a high-energy and high-task environment.


A candidate for appointment to the rank of Assistant Professor shall be required to meet the following qualifications:

  1. An appropriate terminal degree or agree to complete this degree within a period of time to be specified in the terms of the initial contract; and
  2. At least three (3) years of full-time teaching experience, including two (2) years in an institution of higher education.


Appropriate professional experience and achievements may be substituted when formal teaching experience is limited or absent.

When formal teaching experience is limited or absent, the candidate shall be required to demonstrate verifiable potential for effective teaching.

A candidate for appointment to the rank of Associate Professor shall be required to meet the following

qualifications:

  1. An earned doctorate or the highest appropriate credential in the field of specialization, or experience and achievements comparable to the doctorate;
  2. A record of scholarship and professional growth; and
  3. At least five (5) years of full-time teaching experience in an institution of higher education, including three (3) years as an Assistant Professor.


Appropriate professional experience and achievements may be substituted when formal teaching experience is limited or absent.

Collective Bargaining Unit (Union): This position is in the collective bargaining unit represented by National Education Association (NEA) and you may be required to pay an agency service fee through direct payroll deduction.

Visa Sponsorship: At this time, the University of the District of Columbia does not provide sponsorship for visas (e.g. H-1B ). This position is also ineligible for Optional Practical Training (OPT).

Residency Preference: A person applying for a position who is a bona fide District resident at the time of application for the position, may be awarded a 10-point residency preference over non-District applicants, unless the person declines the preference points. If selected, the person shall be required to present no less than 8 proofs of bona fide District residency on or before the effective date of the appointment and maintain such residency for 7 consecutive years from the effective date of the appointment. Failure to maintain bona fide District residency for the 7-year period will result in forfeiture of employment.

Drug-Free Workplace: Pursuant to the requirements of the Drug-Free Workplace Act of 1988, the individual selected to fill this position will, as a condition of employment, be required to notify his/her immediate supervisor, in writing, not later than five (5) days after conviction of any criminal drug statute occurring in the workplace.

Background Investigation: Employment with the University of the District of Columbia is contingent upon a satisfactory background investigation. The determination of a 'satisfactory background investigation' is made at the sole discretion of the University of the District of Columbia. The University may refuse to hire a finalist, rescind an offer of employment to a finalist or review and may terminate the employment of a current employee based on the results of a background investigation.
