The Chemical & Life Science Engineering department in the College of Engineering at Virginia Commonwealth University is seeking a highly motivated, creative and experienced engineer/scientist with expertise in carbon materials. The successful candidate should have a strong understanding of chemical reaction engineering, hydrothermal technology, activated carbon, carbon for batteries, and carbon for supercapacitors. The successful candidate is expected work in a collaborative environment with our external partners.

The research project will involve upgrading of anthracite using supercritical fluid, hydrothermal, thermal technologies to produce carbon materials suitable for energy storage in batteries and supercapacitors, and activated carbon suitable for cleanup of water and air. The project will require use of high pressure and high temperature reactors, and analytical techniques for electrochemical and physical characterization of carbon, for example, surface are, porosity, polarity, adsorption capacity, and charge storage capacity.

This opportunity offers the post-doctoral scholar a unique training opportunity which will be difficult to obtain elsewhere, namely working across the chemical engineering, electrochemistry, and materials, with our collaborating partners in the national laboratories and industry, towards developing high value carbon products.

Required Qualifications

Ph.D. in chemical engineering, materials, chemistry, engineering, physics, or chemistry

Four years of experience in carbon related work

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience in battery/supercapacitor anode material
• Willingness to help mentor graduate and undergraduate students
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills
