Job Overview:

Reporting to the Vice President for Student Life, the Director of Athletics is the chief administrator for the College's NCAA Division III intercollegiate athletics program that supports the individual educational goals and well-being of student-athletes. The Director of Athletics is responsible for the overall management of the varsity, junior varsity and recreation athletics programs as well as the Physical Education Department. Rhodes intercollegiate athletics boasts 21 programs, 19 head coaches, and more than 500 student athletes.

The Director of Athletics provides visionary leadership, strategic planning and policy development for the athletics program; maintains an athletics program that is committed to the College's vision and strategic priorities and the Division III philosophy; works with the College's development office to raise funds for the athletic department; administers the overall athletic budget; recruits and manages the coaching staff; and ensures compliance with all College, national association and conference policies, rules and regulations.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Lead Athletics

  • Lead the creation and management of a comprehensive and holistic student experience in varsity and recreational sports and physical education.

  • Oversee the hiring, training and supervising of coaches and staff in Athletics. Promote a culture of inclusion, belonging and wellbeing in addition to sportsmanship among coaches and students. Ensure and maintain a respectful, supportive environment conducive to the student's athletic, academic, and personal success and satisfaction.

  • Coordinate with Admission regarding athletic recruitment to be consistent with the vision and values of the College. Coordinate and support coaching staff work related to Admissions.

  • Collaborate with Development regarding fundraising to be consistent with the college's goals. Represent the College's athletic program with regard to community outreach events and marketing and promotion efforts.

  • Oversee compliance with regulations, including NCAA, Southern Athletic Association (SAA) and Title IX rules and regulations; maintain participation in SAA and NCAA meetings, regional seminars on Title IX/Gender Equity and NCAA compliance.

  • Oversee and manage all departmental, team, special event, and revenue budgets.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Support Student Life

  • Support the Vice President for Student Life in the implementation of initiatives related to the College's strategic plan and IDEAS plan.

  • Demonstrate a continued commitment to meaningful collaboration, diversity and the ability to think creatively to ensure that the purpose of the intercollegiate athletics programs remains consistent with the mission of the College.

  • Serve as a senior member of the Student Life staff and collaborate on programs and initiatives in support of Student Life broadly.

Job Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree required, Master's Degree preferred.

  • Minimum of 6-8 years professional work experience in collegiate athletics.

Ability to Provide Leadership and Supervise Staff and Manage Environments

  • Experience in athletic operations, events, recruitment, and assessment of collegiate athletic programs.

  • Knowledge of relevant best practices related to athletics and Division III.

  • Understanding related to hiring and training Athletic coaches and staff.

  • Ability to analyze complex situations and to make sound judgments and decisions.

Collaborative and Relational Approach

  • Flexible and evening and weekend hours will be required.

  • Ability to develop and maintain effective partnerships across campus.

  • Ability to interact effectively and respectfully with students, faculty, staff, and families in order to establish and maintain good working relationships.

Strong Communication Skills

  • Strong organizational, communication and writing skills.

  • Ability to effectively present information to large groups of people.

  • Ability to meet strict deadlines, prioritize tasks and work independently is required.

  • Knowledge of FERPA, Clery and HIPPA.

  • Strong computer skills.
