The Department of Philosophy at Southwestern University invites applications for a full-time, benefit-eligible Visiting Assistant Professor position with an emphasis in Latin American and/or Latinx, Black/ Caribbean/African/Africana, or other non-European-centered philosophy to begin August 2021. Given the history of the department, our geographical location, the composition of our student body, and the university’s dynamic Latin American and Borders Studies program, we are particularly interested in applicants whose teaching and research centers on Latin American and/or Latinx Philosophy, but strong applicants whose work is grounded in other traditions and regions will also receive serious consideration. The successful candidate will actively contribute, as teacher and scholar, to our small but dynamic department, which seeks to model critical, historically grounded encounters between the Continental European tradition of philosophy and other philosophical traditions, between philosophy and other academic disciplines, and between theory and social, political, and cultural issues in the present. We are seeking applicants interested in contributing to a range of interdisciplinary programs, including Latin American and Border Studies, Race and Ethnicity Studies, Feminist Studies, Environmental Studies, and/or International Studies, who are passionate about being a teacher-scholar in the liberal arts context, and who have a demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion as intrinsic aspects of excellence in teaching, mentoring, and scholarship.

This is a one-year position, with second and third year appointments contingent on satisfactory performance. The annual course load includes six sections of five separate undergraduate courses, including introductory and upper-level topics courses, with the repetition of some courses in the subsequent two years. Courses are capped at 25 students. We welcome novel approaches to traditional classes, as well as ideas for new courses. This position includes opportunities for both. We are committed to providing support and mentoring for our new visiting assistant professor and to helping enable their future career.

Candidates must have a PhD or ABD in Philosophy or a closely allied field (with at least 18 credits of graduate coursework in Philosophy), a demonstrated record of commitment to and excellence in teaching undergraduate students, a demonstrated commitment to mentoring students from underrepresented groups, including racially minoritized students, and cultivating inclusion and belonging, and an active research agenda.

Southwestern University is a selective, undergraduate institution committed to a broad-based liberal arts, sciences, and fine arts education. The department will begin reviewing applications immediately and continue until the position is filled.

All offers of employment are contingent on successful completion of the University’s Background Check Policy process.  Southwestern University is an Equal Opportunity Employer.  EOE/M/F
