Communications Specialist

General summary/purpose:

Wilmer Eye Institute, Johns Hopkins Medicine seeks a Communications Specialist to create impactful content that effectively communicates the research being done by the Institute and improves communication with our patients and employees. This role supports the Marketing and Communications department within the Wilmer Eye Institute. This person would help drive the content strategy to support promotion of the work of our faculty as well as improving patient literature and communication. This person would develop new content ideas, interview faculty and subject matter experts and lead the content process from start to finish. With guidance from the senior marketing manager, the Communications Specialist conceptualizes and creates a variety of writing deliverables in the appropriate style to meet the strategic and tactical goals of each center and its target audience.

This person is an effective writer, creative and strategic thinker, and must be able to work on several high priority projects concurrently with minimal supervision.

This person is also responsible for supporting the communication needs of our eight Wilmer locations. Communication support would include writing materials for patient letters, brochures.

Specific duties & responsibilities:
• Identify stories about the Wilmer Eye Institute. These stories will primarily function to communicate scientific discoveries, patient stories, clinical care in our divisions and our residency and fellowship programs
• Interface and collaborate with our clinic leaders to support the communication needs of our eight Wilmer locations
• Lead the communication process for onboarding and departing physicians
• Writing a variety of content across both digital and print channels such as articles, promotional messaging, digital marketing assets, event support, patient literature
• Conduct research and interviews with subject matter experts
• Developing content which resonates with Wilmer’s audience of both referring ophthalmologists and patients to aligns with Wilmer’s tone and voice
• Proofread and copy edit public facing materials
• Develop and post content to social media accounts. Assist in building strategic plans to build and engage audiences on social media about Wilmer research, activities, and events.
• Work with marketing manager and existing communications specialist to generate new content initiatives, track and report on content metrics.
• Participate in weekly meetings with the full editorial team, marketing agency and central communications.

Minimum qualifications (mandatory):

• Bachelor's degree in related field, preferably in journalism, marketing, writing, or public relations
• Two years related experience.
• Advanced degree may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

• Writing samples required

Preferred qualifications:
• 5-7 years related experience in writing and research
• Experience in healthcare marketing is preferred but not mandatory
• Working knowledge of social media networks such as LinkedIn, Twitter and Facebook

Special knowledge, skills, and abilities:
• Excellent communication skills, written and verbal, and strong interpersonal skills
• Commitment to a collegial workplace
• Ability to work independently and in a results-oriented workplace
• Proficiency in Word, Excel spreadsheets, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
• Experience using Google Analytics, Adobe Creative Suite, and WordPress.
• Ability to meet tight deadlines, along with demonstrated ability to juggle multiple projects.
• First-hand knowledge of regional and national print, broadcast and electronic media outlets, and social networking, including web-based and online media/information sites.

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
