Assistant Director of Diversity and Inclusion



Job Summary



The Center for Diversity and Inclusion (CDI) at Buena Vista University enhances the visibility and awareness of diversity within our campus community by creating opportunities for students, staff, and faculty to come together for cultural exchange and celebration. The CDI works collaboratively with academic and co-curricular departments to promote student learning, development, persistence, and success through educational outreach, social justice and cultural programming, support and advocacy, and community building.

The Assistant Director for the Center for Diversity and Inclusion (CDI) at Buena Vista University is a full-time, 12-month position. As a member of the Center for Diversity and Inclusion staff, the Assistant Director reports to the Senior Director and will assist with the daily operations of the Center. This position exists to create and deliver opportunities to expand the cultural development and understanding of students on campus. The Assistant Director is responsible for creating, implementing, marketing, and assessing diversity program initiatives as well as developing and implementing cross-cultural programming for diverse students focused on social justice/diverse competencies leading to increased recruitment and retention. As a member of the CDI team, the Assistant Director will also provide departmental support and guidance on effective methods for retaining and providing cultural support to historically marginalized communities on campus. The Assistant Director will work effectively within a culture inclusive of individuals with diverse backgrounds, styles, abilities, and motivations, and appreciate and leverage the capabilities, insights, and ideas of all individuals.



Primary Responsibilities



  • Organizes educational and programmatic efforts for students of diverse backgrounds
  • Provides trainings and resources to the university community to embrace and understand differing perspectives
  • Assists in the strategic planning of the Center for Diversity and Inclusion


Duties include:



  • Assists diverse and international students in reaching their highest level of academic potential and persistence towards graduation
  • Assists with fostering a safe and supportive living and learning environment within which students can explore their own cultural identity
  • Helps diverse and international students set and achieve realistic career goals
  • Develops and encourages strong relations and collaboration among diversity club members
  • Educates the BVU campus community regarding the nature of an inclusive society
  • Assists with retention efforts for diverse students and first-generation students
  • Provides guidance and advisement for diversity clubs
  • Helps to advance the university’s commitment to becoming a Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI)
  • Develops an understanding of the enrollment process at Buena Vista University and actively participates in that process, assisting in developing relationships with leads and applicants
  • Helps facilitate admissions visits for diverse students
  • Maintains effective communication with the faculty, financial assistance, coaches, and appropriate staff members as necessary to facilitate their retention efforts
  • Participates in regular planning and evaluation sessions with the Senior Director and maintain frequent and professional contact with other offices and programs on campus and actively participates in planning and training sessions with consultants brought in by the university
  • Assists with selecting recipients for the Multicultural Scholarship
  • Coordinates multicultural programs and events in conjunction with dedicated student leaders while extending the efforts into the Storm Lake Community. Examples: Diversity and Inclusion Week, MLK celebration, Fiesta on the Block
  • Assesses student learning outcomes that connect to programmatic efforts
  • Represents the CDI at national and local student recruitment fairs
  • Promotes CDI recruitment, diversity, inclusion, and belonging efforts on social media platforms
  • Serves in the absence of the Senior Director of Diversity and Inclusion
  • Works some nights and weekends
  • Other duties as assigned by the Senior Director of Diversity and Inclusion and/or Vice President of Student Success


Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience required
  • Minimum of 3 to 5 years relevant work experience in higher education setting working with student organizations, program planning and implementation, training design and delivery, and community building required


Preferred Qualifications and Skills

· Master’s degree in higher education

· Bilingual in English and Spanish strongly recommended

· Strong written and oral communication skills

  • Demonstrated understanding of the dynamics of difference, privilege, and power, and the ability to foster constructive dialogue with different groups across campus, establish communications structures, and work in collaboration with others to ensure an inclusive environment.


· Experience working with students belonging to underrepresented groups

  • Familiarity with reporting tools and the ability to analyze information; previous experience using technology to facilitate and support diversity, inclusion and belonging initiatives
  • Ability to work with a diverse group of constituents, including faculty, staff, and students


· Support and promote Buena Vista University’s vision and mission

· Strong collaborative style is highly desirable

· Adaptable and flexible

· A valid driver’s license is necessary for business trips

· Must be available to travel for business, including possible car rental

  • Must be able to pack, lift, and carry boxes containing CDI-related materials (up to 30 lbs.)
