Professional Research Scientists

About Northeastern:
Founded in 1898, Northeastern is a global research university and the recognized leader in experience-driven lifelong learning. Our world-renowned experiential approach empowers our students, faculty, alumni, and partners to create impact far beyond the confines of discipline, degree, and campus.

Our locations—in Boston; Charlotte, North Carolina; London; Portland, Maine; San Francisco; Seattle; Silicon Valley; Toronto; Vancouver; and the Massachusetts communities of Burlington and Nahant—are nodes in our growing global university system. Through this network, we expand opportunities for flexible, student-centered learning and collaborative, solutions-focused research.

Northeastern's comprehensive array of undergraduate and graduate programs— in a variety of on-campus and online formats—lead to degrees through the doctorate in nine colleges and schools. Among these, we offer more than 195 multi-discipline majors and degrees designed to prepare students for purposeful lives and careers.

About the Opportunity:
The Network Science Institute (NetSI) is launching a new Network Science Research program to recruit a cohort of 3-4 outstanding research scientists working on network science-related areas. Positions will range from early career to senior level roles and will be offered by a departmental home commensurate with background and expertise. Fellows will become core members of the network science institute, a community of researchers and graduate students with diverse academic expertise. Fellows are expected to gradually forge their way to research independence, moving from Institute provided salary support to primarily grant-funds over the course of 3 years. At the end of the three-year period, there will be an option to continue as professional research staff, or be offered a tenured position. Fellows will be integrated into the vibrant intellectual community of the Institute, including ample opportunities for collaborations and independent proposal development.

Candidates are sought from all scientific fields, particularly for those interested in advancing network science theory and/or methods, or to extend network strategies to novel applications. While research interests will ideally cut across multiple areas, the candidate must be able to intersect with at least one of our current research programs including: the role of cellular and sub-cellular connections in biological function and disease (biological networks); disease spread through populations (epidemiological spreading models); use of digital platforms in shaping opinion, policies, and/or governance (networks for good); coordination of teams, organizations, or communities with shared goals (network performance); development of algorithms and platforms to model behavior of meta populations (network forecasting).

Responsibilities:
Fellows will be active members of the Network Science Institute, dedicated to creating synergy among faculty expertise, across departments and colleges, with shared computing infrastructure, active lecture series and vibrant collaborative research opportunities. The individuals filling these positions will also be expected to contribute to our distinctive PhD program in Network Science, by working with doctoral trainees, and contributing to knowledge exchange.

Qualifications:
Candidates must have a doctorate degree in a social, biological, information or physical science field prior to start date of the appointment. In addition, the candidate should have already done substantial research with scholarly publications and must have a demonstrated potential for externally funded network science-related research and excellence.

Preferred Qualifications:

Salary Grade:
Compensation and title will depend on prior experience, ranging from early career to senior level roles (see NU pay scale information)
  • Associate research scientist: grade 11
  • Senior research scientist: grade 12
  • Principal research scientist: grade 13
