Title IX Coordinator & Senior Director for Title IX Compliance

The Opportunity
The University of Virginia is pleased to invite candidates to apply for the position of Title IX Coordinator & Senior Director for Title IX Compliance. This position reports to the Associate Vice President for the Office for Equal Opportunity and Civil Rights (EOCR) under the Vice President for Diversity, Equity, Inclusion & Community Partnerships. UVA’s Title IX Coordinator will provide strategic leadership for the University’s efforts to ensure sex and gender-based equity and Title IX compliance in its programs and activities; coordinate awareness, education, and training efforts; and direct the University’s response to all forms of sexual misconduct, including those that fall within the scope of Title IX. This position leads the Title IX team within the Office for Equal Opportunity & Civil Rights, including a Deputy Title IX Coordinator and team of investigators, providing supervision and management of outreach and response measures, investigations, hearings, alternative resolutions, and EOCR-provided education and training efforts.

The Title IX Coordinator & Senior Director for Title IX Compliance will have opportunities to succeed and lead the efforts of the Title IX team within EOCR.

Key Priorities

  • Strategic leadership: oversight of sexual misconduct and Title IX related efforts, including strategic planning, building and enhancing partnership and collaboration, policy guidance, and Title IX team management.
  • Title IX response: initial assessment, overseeing investigation and resolution processes, including alternative forms of resolution, sanctions, and remedies.
  • Outreach and education: education, prevention, and training; climate assessment; research, programming, and communications.

Candidate Profile
Candidates must have a J.D., PhD, or master’s degree in education, public administration, public policy, or other relevant discipline; a Juris Doctorate from an accredited law school is preferred but not required. Preference will be given to those with demonstrated experience with Title IX or similar sex/gender-based civil rights laws, either in an investigator or coordinator type role, in higher education or a closely related field. Demonstration of Title IX and/or civil rights investigative training, such as ATIXA certification, is preferred as well.

 Professional Experience

  • Demonstrated experience investigating and resolving complaints alleging sexual and gender-based harassment, sexual assault, sexual exploitation, intimate partner violence, stalking, complicity and retaliation in higher education and employment, including knowledge of trauma-informed investigative techniques as well as informal resolution/alternative resolution techniques.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills and the ability to work collaboratively effectively.
  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong presentation and facilitation skills.
  • A history of working with confidential and sensitive information.
  • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills.
  • Demonstrated exceptional organizational, planning, and management skills and the ability to prioritize multiple (often competing) commitments and responsibilities.
  • Demonstrated experience with and commitment to working effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds in support of an inclusive and welcoming environment.
  • Knowledge of assessment practices involving evaluation of outcome-based measures and climate surveys.
  • Knowledge of best practices in higher education compliance with Title IX and VAWA.
  • Ability to act independently, take initiative, and exercise sound judgment.
  • Ability to adapt to changing regulatory and legal changes.
  • Deep sensitivity to and a thorough understanding of the many experiences and expressions of trauma caused by sexual and gender-based harassment and violence.
  • The courage and integrity to pursue the right course of action, even in the face of vocal or powerful opposition.
