What You’ll Do: This position will work with the Research and Development Team, within the larger Data Team, to leverage geospatial and statistical methods in the development of new tools for integration and scaling for the organization’s communication tools. Additionally, this role will be primarily focused on the use of those model derivatives in working with the internal research groups to produce research in the form of white papers, reports, and peer-reviewed scientific articles and in support of the First Street mission and communication needs.

 

Some day to day responsibilities include but are not limited to

    Utilizing geospatial analytic techniques to quantify and exploit spatio-temporal relationships to generate new data and methods as proof of concepts that are scalable to the entire country Writing content in a scientific tone that is accessible to both expert and non-expert readers. Analyzing property level flood risk information for marketing communications. This work will be performed at scale through the creation of automated scripts built using R, Python, and SQL, Postgres, PostGIS, and others. 

 

Qualifications:

    Background in the social and economic impacts of a changing environment.  Relevant fields include Economics, Sociology, Geography, or any others with an applied focus on socio-economic impacts and climate change. Experience in the application statistical modeling in the development of research papers/reports 3-5 years of working with geospatial data Strong understanding of probability and statistics in spatial processes Expertise using scripted languages to efficiently and reproducibly create outputs Expertise with database querying and aggregation, particularly with SQL Expertise with big data analysis and parallel processing workflows Capability of executing with a high degree of concern for accuracy and reproducibility Documented experience in the application of statistical models in the understanding of economic and social impacts associated with environmental change for peer-reviewed publication
