Position Summary:
This position assists professional veterinary medical personnel in complex anesthesia procedures in support of the daily operational needs of UW Veterinary Care (UWVC). Employees work with both small and large animal patients in Anesthesia with back-up support to the Critical Care Unit. The work involves independent decision-making responsibilities which can affect the quality/outcome of animal life. Initiative and follow through capabilities are essential. Requires the ability to lift a minimum of 50 lbs. independently and physical and manual dexterity to perform specialized technical tasks. Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:
1) Oversees/coordinates/guides workflow specific to procedures requiring anesthesia.
2) Develops knowledge and responsibility in area of specialization to include: maintenance of special equipment, instructing others in use and care, assisting clinicians and students in procedures.
3) Anticipates needs of clinicians/staff/students in procedures and primary care.
4) Assists in the instruction of professional veterinary students and training of entry level Veterinary Technicians as requested.
5) Contributes/participates in team building by assisting in problem solving activities.
The work is performed under limited supervision.

Highly qualified candidates will have the following: a minimum of 1 year experience working as a Small Animal technician; possess excellent communication and technical skills; ability to multitask and prioritize while assisting/teaching 4th year students; ability to make independent decisions which can affect the quality/outcome of animal life; function calmly in stressful situations and to work cooperatively with other people.
Requires the ability to lift a minimum of 50 lbs. independently and physical and manual dexterity to perform specialized technical tasks.
Special consideration given to: Technicians with Veterinary Technician Specialty in Anesthesia (VTS).
License or Certificate:
Certification as Wisconsin Veterinary Technician or Eligibility to Obtain within 12 months

Requires the ability to lift a minimum of 50 lbs. independently and physical and manual dexterity to
perform specialized technical tasks.
This position is posted at Vet Tech levels 1, 2 and 3. Level is determined by qualifications based on type of prior veterinary tech experience.
To qualify for Level 1: Entry level, new CVT grad or awaiting to sit for the CVT exam, or some CVT working experience with no specialization.
To qualify for Level 2: Generally over 2 years of veterinary tech experience, may substitute years of experience for
specialization.
To qualify for Level 3: Veterinary Tech Specialist (VTS), or highly qualified and specialized in a specific area, may have prior experience from another university hospital.
