Position Summary:

The Department of Surgery at the University of Wisconsin- Madison, School of Medicine and Public Health seeks a dynamic and innovative otolaryngologist-head and neck surgeon to lead the Division of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery. The Division Chair will lead and direct successful clinical, research and education programs that span the breadth of a wide-ranging field. A faculty of 30 provides clinical expertise in head and neck oncologic and reconstructive surgery, pediatric otolaryngology, otology-neurotology, general otolaryngology, laryngology, rhinology-skull base surgery, and facial plastic and reconstructive surgery, as well as speech-language pathology and audiology. Education within the division includes a commitment to medical student education and curriculum, an ACGME-accredited residency program of 15 residents and fellowships in Laryngology and Head and Neck Oncologic and Reconstructive Surgery. Active research programs in six faculty-investigator labs include 23 NIH-funded extramural grants. The Division provides full-spectrum otolaryngology care for adults and children in six clinical practice sites in the Madison area and six outreach sites across Wisconsin and Illinois. The chairperson provides direction, vision, oversight, development and accountability across the full range of the academic mission, and partners with colleagues across the School of Medicine and Public Health, UW Health, and the broader health system.

The Department of Surgery consists of more than 140 faculty across eleven specialty divisions, performing more than 25,000 operations annually. The Department also trains more than 70 residents and fellows and is consistently ranked amongst the top surgery programs with extramural research funding.

Principal Duties:

The selected Division Chair will be an accomplished otolaryngology-head and neck surgeon with success in scholarly pursuits. The Division Chair will be responsible for developing effective relationships with system and local clinical and administrative leaders to accomplish the goals and objectives of the Division of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, Department of Surgery, and School of Medicine and Public Health. Duty allocations are approximate and include:

Management and Leadership (30%) The selected Division Chair will be responsible for managing and leading the Division, which will include working with faculty and staff to leverage their strengths, developing and enhancing Division-wide academic initiatives, empowering individuals to contribute to the mission of the health system, identifying and implementing ways to ensure a cohesive and collaborative culture, and promoting engagement with Department strategic initiatives. The Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery Chair will report to the Chair of the Department of Surgery.

Clinical, Research and Education Activity (50%) The successful applicant must have a demonstrated record of successful clinical practice as well as excellence in research and education, and be able to demonstrate the capacity to further grow and enhance the research and educational missions of the Division. Clinical activities will correlate with the incumbent's surgical specialty. The chairperson will participate in training of medical students, residents, and fellows, and will be expected to provide high quality care to the patients of UW Health.

Clinical Program and Faculty Development (20%) Ideal candidates will possess a record of creating and enhancing clinical programs and service lines, aligning clinical care pathways across multiple care locations, maintaining a track record of responsible fiscal oversight, and establishing collaborative relationships with administrators and physicians.

Degree and Area of Specialization:

MD, DO or equivalent is required.

Minimum Years and Type of Relevant Work Experience:

Applicants should have a history of successful clinical program development and a demonstrated track record of scholarship. Candidates must possess clinical and academic credentials sufficient for appointment at the Tenure Track rank of Associate Professor or Professor. Appointment as associate professor or full professor will require that candidate's credentials meet criteria for rank established by the School of Medicine and Public Health and UW-Madison guidelines.

License or Certificate:

Specialization must include current certification by the American Board of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery (ABOHNS) or by the American Osteopathic Boards of Ophthalmology and Otorhinolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery (AOBOOHNS).

Candidate is required to have, or be eligible for, a Wisconsin Medical License and must be eligible for enrollment as a billing provider and for all necessary hospital privileges within the UW Health network.
