The Director of Foundation Relations works closely with the Executive Director of Corporate and Foundation Relations ( CFR ), CFR team, and campus colleagues to develop and implement strategies for external foundation support vis-a-vis Syracuse’s strengths, priorities and the Academic Strategic Plan/ Academic Initiatives. S/he identifies and solicits a portfolio of foundation prospects for research, philanthropic and other support and provides quality stewardship to promote long-term relationships with the University. The Director reports to the Executive Director of Corporate and Foundation Relations ( CFR ).

Qualifications

A four-year degree, and ideally an advanced degree, is required. Preferred candidates for this role will have at least five years of experience as a professional development officer with working knowledge of the principles and practices of foundation fundraising at a major research university. They will have a track record in setting priorities, managing workflow and meeting or exceeding goals in a high-paced work environment. A proven ability to establish and manage a variety of relationships with complex organizations and the ability to understand and communicate the value of faculty research/ higher education initiatives to funders are key components of this position.

A valid Driver’s License is required.

Job Specific Qualifications

This role requires detailed knowledge of grant and proposal writing including translating research and academic priorities into the language and mission of foundation funders and grant applications. In addition, knowledge of foundation funders and priorities and their role in partnering with and advancing higher education including faculty research, student programs and other institutional initiatives. Leadership and inter-personal acumen are required to not only build external and internal relationship but the ability to create consensus, design and implement a vision with regards to strategic priorities and big ideas and lead important college and multi-disciplinary initiatives across the university is a must.

Responsibilities

Identify, cultivate, solicit and steward a caseload of 50 foundation prospects and donors. Secure new levels of institutional support and deeper engagement from foundations through grants, sponsored research, in-kind support and direct philanthropy.

Create and implement effective collaborative relationships with faculty, deans and other internal constituents in the University’s academic and auxiliary units to support foundation strategies, project development, proposal submission, and stewardship methods. The Director works closely with school and college chief development officers to build relationships and facilitate communication that fosters effective collaborative results.

Gain on-going knowledge of university priorities and foundation interests to identify potential prospects for funding. Collaborate internally to convene partners/stakeholders and coalesce concepts for cross-institutional initiatives.

Manage communications with central development, regional sites and college-based units to advance the University’s multi-faceted relationships with foundation donors. Prepare foundation briefings for university leadership and maintain relationship records on database.

Coordinate and ensure the accuracy of data entry and maintenance of external foundations related development records, interactions, and donor/prospect files via CITRUS in collaboration with AEA central units.
