Research Assistant or Associate Scientist in Cellular Neuroscience (73039)

The Department of Physical Therapy, College of Public Health and Health Professions at the University of Florida invites qualified individuals to apply for an Assistant or Associate Research Scientist position. This new position is a 12-month, full-time (1.0 FTE) non-tenure track faculty position. The department is seeking a dynamic individual with demonstrated potential for extramural grant funding and a strong publication record. The applicant is expected to be a scientist with expertise in cell biology studies of the innate immune system (particularly microglia), and interest in working with a multi-disciplinary team focused on intermittent hypoxia and its effects on the neural control of breathing. The individual selected must enjoy working in a highly collaborative environment, and interact effectively with a diverse and multidisciplinary group of faculty, staff, researchers, clinicians and trainees.

UF Physical Therapy and the McKnight Brain Institute: The academic environment at UF is exceptional, with rigorous academic programs, state-of-the-art facilities and equipment, and a large offering of clinical and research seminars and conferences. The Department of Physical Therapy faculty is strongly committed to excellence in both research and teaching, and has received numerous national research and teaching awards. The laboratory in which this individual would work is within the McKnight Brain Institute. The laboratory is part of a strong group of investigators devoted to studies of respiratory motor control, with an emphasis on mechanisms of spinal respiratory motor plasticity, including studies concerning the role of microglia and inflammation in regulating that plasticity, and translation of that knowledge to both animal models and humans with respiratory deficits due to spinal cord injury or neuromuscular disease.

Minimum Requirements: PhD degree

Preferred Qualifications: 1) expertise in cell biological approaches to the study of the innate immune system; 2) experience with flow cytometry highly desirable; 3) interest in studies of intermittent hypoxia and its impact on the nervous system; 4) an excellent publication record in neuroscience or a related field; 3) advanced post-doctoral training for assistant scientist; experience as junior faculty member for appointment as associate scientist; and 4) ability to develop a strong plan to secure extramural funding in an area consistent with the mission and goals of the Breathing Research and Therapeutics Center.
