Job Description:

The laboratory of Dr. Nikhil Urs in the Department of Pharmacology & Therapeutic is seeking candidates for a Biological Scientist III, who will assist researchers in the laboratory studying the signaling and circuit mechanisms, and behavioral changes underlying normal and pathological dopamine neurotransmission in psychiatric and neurodegenerative disorders. The research program also involves active drug screening campaigns to identify novel therapeutic targets. Find more information about the laboratory here: https://sites.google.com/site/urslabuf/.

Responsibilities include:

Mouse survival surgeries- Injection of viral vectors and/or Pre-formed fibrils.

Plan, design, modify and/or alter experiments on advanced research projects primarily involving injection of viruses (AAVs) or pre-formed fibrils into different brain regions of mice.

Biochemical Analyses

Isolate brains or tissues for immunohistochemical, neurochemistry, or biochemical analyses. These include but are not limited to brain perfusions, sectioning of brain, antibody labeling/IHC, RNAscope or PCR. Basic confocal microscopy for capturing images of labeled sections.

Behavior Analyses

Perform research experiments investigating the effects of various genetic, AAV or pharmacological manipulations on the behavior of mice.

Research Project Coordination

Serves as a liaison between PI/Director, lab staff and collaborators within as well as external to UF. Responsible for the complete understanding and compliance with all required laboratory regulations such EH&S, IACUC, UF, State and Federal guidelines. Maintains accurate records and legal documentation required by institutional policies such as biological, chemical and radiation safety policies. Manage ordering process to ensure efficient and cost-effective use of grant funding; maintain lab supply inventory to ensure efficient and cost-effective use f grant funding; maintain lab supply inventory to ensure supplies are available for scheduled research projects; researched and evaluates new products, compares and negotiated vendor prices. Works on independent project and modifies experimental protocols based on particular needs.

Scientific Writing and Dissemination

Analyze data and assemble results for scientific publications, grants and conference presentations; assist in preparing data for scientific manuscripts, abstracts, grants and other documents; manage accurate and complete laboratory research records and prepares daily written reports of experimental results; assists laboratory research with searches for and review of scientific literature relevant to the research focus of the laboratory. Aids in the development of new research and laboratory protocols. Manages SOPs in the lab and uploads them to Gator LATCH.

Expected Salary:

$38,900 - $49,000

Minimum Requirements:

Bachelors degree in biology or a closely related field and seven years of relevant experience; or a Masters degree in biology or a closely related field and five years of relevant experience; Doctoral degree in biology or a closely related field and two years of relevant experience.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Prior Laboratory experience.
  • Knowledge of basic neuroscience.
  • Good interpersonal skills and organizational skills.
  • Capacity to follow written procedures.
  • Ability to complete reports in English.
  • Ability to work with a large amount of distractions.
