Position Primary Purpose and General Responsibilities

Reporting to the Chief Administrative Officer, the Event Planner is responsible for executing a comprehensive events program with a primary focus on planning and management of Massey events. The Event Planner works collaboratively with colleagues to gain feedback and inform program design, enhancements, or modifications. The position serves as the lead planner and is responsible for the strategy, planning, and execution of logistics for events such as donor events, retreats, symposiums, seminars and occasional smaller events. This position manages (from inception to completion) all aspects of events, including visioning, list management, budget development and management, marketing, coordination of event/vendor communications and logistics, event execution, post-event evaluation, and metric tracking. The position provides analysis and information on complex activities and results and makes recommendations for program changes and the development of new events as required. The position will require working some off-peak hours for event planning and execution, as well as potential overnight travel for out of town events.

Minimum Hiring Standards

•Minimum of 5 years of full-time experience managing events in a fast-paced, complex environment
•Exceptional oral, written, and interpersonal skills
•Exceptional planning and organizational skills
•Ability to build relationships with vendors, negotiate contracts, build and maintain accurate and conscientious budgets
•Ability to prioritize, focus, work independently and be a self-starter.
•Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so at VCU

Preferred Hiring Standards

•Undergraduate degree from an accredited university
• Experience working in an institution of higher education
• Experience working with databases and tracking data/metrics
•Experience in event management systems and applications
•Experience managing budgets
•Event planning certification
