General Nature or Purpose of Job:

As a group of professional faculty and staff with statistical, epidemiological, computing and information technology expertise at the Department of Epidemiology, Bloomberg School of Public Health, we provide leadership in complex study design, research coordination, data management and analytical methods for cohort studies. To meet our increasing needs, we are seeking a Software Engineer to join our growing team. The ideal candidate must be energetic, organized and a detail-oriented team player and will be an integral part of our group. The Software Engineer will provide technical support to our group members, help manage our data structure system including windows, linux and network storage servers, and maintain our web server system.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for installation, configuration, administration, support and maintenance of windows systems
  • Perform system and network monitoring
  • Managing user accounts and access permissions
  • Managing user and system backups
  • Managing helpdesk and troubleshooting
  • Implementing enterprise Mac/Windows workstation management
  • Ensure all processes follow policy, recommend solutions to risks
  • Author and maintain documentation by writing audience-appropriate materials to serve as technical and/or end-user references
  • Maintain web environment by identifying system requirements, installing upgrades and monitoring system performance.
Minimum Education Required:

Bachelor’s degree required, preferably in Computer Science or other related field.

Related Work Experience:

  • 5 years related experience.
  • 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis.
Special skills/Knowledge:

  • Experience with: Mac OS X, Windows
  • Knowledge of: DNS, DHCP, SSH, TCP/IP
  • Familiarity with: VMWare, Linux, Virtualization
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Self-motivated and able to prioritize tasks
  • Able to work in teams and individually
  • Creative problem-solving skills
  • Willingness to learn and grow

Preferred:

  • Knowledge of and experience with research administration systems, student information systems, or higher education industry
  • Knowledge of and experience using php, MySql, MSSQL, ASP.net, Wordpress

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
