Job Description

The School of Performing Arts at Virginia Tech seeks a dynamic, energetic, and creative theatre artist/technician to supervise our scene shop and instruct our students in state-of-the-art scenic technologies. We seek a colleague with recent professional practice and an attention to detail suited to the production of quality craftsmanship, while providing safe, hands-on instruction at the undergraduate and graduate level.

The Scene Shop Supervisor works under the Technical Director and cohesively with other faculty and staff involved in the season’s productions. Duties and responsibilities of the Scene Shop Supervisor include: the supervision of scenic construction for all program productions in our annual season of events; the instruction of scenic technology topics to undergraduate and graduate students in the shop setting; the organization and upkeep of materials and supplies necessary for construction; the enforcement of shop safety and safe practices (in compliance with EHS and OSHA/NFPA guidelines); the coordination of the shop space in a safe and orderly fashion; and maintaining the scene shop facility and tool maintenance. The successful candidate will instruct students on our productions with a hands-on approach during all phases of production; construction, technical rehearsals, and strikes. A teaching load of one topics course per semester is expected in addition to teaching labs and maintaining the scene shop. The Scene Shop Supervisor may be asked to serve on committees and perform other university service as appropriate. Appointment begins August 10, 2021. The position has instructor status, includes a university health/benefits package, and is a single-year contract.

Required Qualifications

A BA or BFA degree in a theatre-related discipline or a BA in another field with equivalent technical theatre experience; a record of significant experience in the field of technical theatre, including: MIG welding; advanced carpentry, rigging, shop supervision, lighting, shop equipment maintenance, and electrical wiring practice. The candidate must be able to work at heights on ladders, telescopic lifts, and grids; be able to lift 50 lbs; and have a valid driver’s license.

Preferred Qualifications

M.F.A. in scenic technology or related discipline, AutoCAD and Excel use, TIG welding and metal fabrication (machining), experience in automation (hydraulics, pneumatics, motors, control), First Aid/CPR training, material requisition, and previous student supervision.
