Description of the Department or Unit

University Libraries of Appalachian State University consist of the Belk Library and Information Commons and the Erneston Music Library and employ 85 library faculty and staff. Belk Library is a beautifully designed and popular facility with over 1 million visits per year. We are a member of the Western North Carolina Library Network ( WNCLN ). Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Reports to: Coordinator of Collection Management

Position Context
At Appalachian, Belk Library and Information Commons serve as the primary information source for academic/research departments and colleges. Library faculty work in a collegial team-based environment, are members of the University faculty, participate in the Library’s instruction program, and engage in active programs of scholarship and professional service. Library faculty communicate with a wide variety of patrons, including students, faculty, staff, researchers, vendors, staff in other libraries, and the general public. Some positions require specialized knowledge in an additional discipline, field, or subject area. Some positions may independently lead, guide, and direct functional areas of a library.

Collection Management Librarian responsibilities include:
Assessment/strategy, budgeting, collection supervision, and outreach/instruction to liaison departments. The librarian’s outlook is holistic and collaborative, examining the overall needs of the university and library while advocating for their assigned departments and programs.

Core Position Responsibilities

Collection management

  • Work collaboratively as a member of the Collection Management Team, participating in collection analysis, budget management, and policy development.
  • Select and manage materials that support the curriculum in the areas of English, art, history, theatre, dance, and others related to the humanities.
  • Consult with the technical services team (Resources and Acquisitions Management) and monitor processing of humanities materials.


Budgeting & Assessment

  • Wisely and judiciously use funds provided for purchase of humanities materials to support instruction, student, and faculty research.
  • Determine budget needs of assigned departments and programs, and advocate for a suitable annual fund allocation within the holistic conversation about university needs. The librarian is responsible for understanding their budgets and expending those funds in an expeditious manner.
  • Work collaboratively as a member of the Collection Management Team, participating in collection analysis, budget management, and policy development.
  • Maintain regular communication with the faculty and students in their disciplines.
  • Follow information trends in assigned areas, and keep track of curricular changes.
  • Analyze circulation, ILL, usage, and pricing data to provide useful statistical metrics for decision-making.


Instruction & Outreach

  • Participate in the Library’s instruction program, usually for upper-level students and faculty, including classroom instruction and individual research consultations both on-campus and online with a focus on humanities disciplines.
  • Collaborate with the Information Literacy Librarian for Humanities and other instruction faculty in the library.
  • Assist in the assessment of instruction and reference services.
  • Serve as front-line contact for questions about the collection and intellectual property, i.e. licensing agreements, and may rely on others in the library with deeper knowledge as appropriate.
  • Outreach proactively with humanities faculty in support of their teaching and scholarship.
  • Address the information needs of individuals and groups through marketing products and services.
  • Provide advanced reference service, both online and in-person, to students and faculty. -Collection management librarians serve as the subject expert, particularly for junior, senior, graduate, and faculty clientele.
    -Support special projects & events in the humanities, scholarly communication (i.e. the NC DOCKS institutional repository), and digital humanities on campus.
  • Contribute to campus and library-related programming.


Scholarship and Service

  • Engage in an active program of scholarship and professional service to the Library, to the University, and/or to the public, including committee work, as specified in the University’s Faculty Handbook.
