Position Primary Purpose and General Responsibilities

The VCU Environmental Safety and Risk Management Team has an exciting opportunity for a Radiation Safety Specialist to join our team! VCU EHS seeks culturally and professionally diverse individuals skilled in Radiation Safety Programs.

Safety and Risk Management ( SRM ) partners with the VCU community to promote and facilitate a positive, campus-wide attitude of safety excellence and environmental stewardship to protect university assets and reduce risks.

The primary mission of Environmental Health & Safety ( SRM - EHS ) is to advance and support a safe and healthful environment at VCU and VCU Health. SRM - EHS works to meet this goal through surveys, consultation, teaching, advising and environmental monitoring. As the University liaison, they work with outside agencies and organizations to address all applicable standards.

The Radiation Safety Specialist coordinates and implements specific segments of VCU’s and VCU Health’s radiation safety program to meet all State, federal and university regulations and policies.

Duties may include, but are not limited to:

•Perform radiation safety surveys, patient monitoring, inspections, investigations, and lab analysis.
•Coordinate with the VCU Medical Center’s ED response to Weapons of Mass Destruction ( WMD ).
•Prepare and provide Radiation Safety training and instruction.
•Independently coordinate Radiation Safety Emergency Program and Drills
•Additional duties as assigned.

Minimum Hiring Standards

•Graduation from an accredited college or university with major course work in physical or biological sciences, with additional course work in health physics or a related radiological field. An equivalent combination of training and experience indicating possessing of the preceding knowledge and abilities may substitute for this education and experience.

•Experience in radiation safety, radioactive materials licensing, or other areas of health physics.

•Comprehensive knowledge of the principles and practice of health physics and radiation safety.

•Considerable knowledge of applicable state and federal radiation control standards/regulations and medical uses of radioactive material and radiation-producing devices.

•Knowledge of instrumentation used in radiation detection and measurement and applications and capabilities of data processing systems.

•Ability to coordinate the receipt, transfer, storage, and inventory maintenance of radioactive material.

•Demonstrated ability to plan and implement radiation surveillance programs and conduct appropriate sampling under emergency conditions; to manage a technical program and radiation training program; and, to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.

•Demonstrated excellent customer service skills.

•Demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Access and PowerPoint) and the Google suite of applications and the ability to learn to use these tools.

•Ability to work at VCU during emergencies or when the University closes during uncertain weather conditions and others as assigned.

•Must be able to work on-call.

•Ability to lift 50 lbs. and climb ladders.

•Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff and student environment or commitment to do so as a staff member at VCU .

Preferred Hiring Standards

Prefer certification or registration by one of the following: National Registry of Radiation Protection Technologists, Nuclear Medicine Certification Board, American Registry of Radiologic Technologists, or other radiation safety certifications/registrations.
