Mission or Goal of Unit

VCU’s Autism Center for Excellence ( VCU - ACE ) conducts advanced training, technical assistance, and dissemination activities specifically to improve the educational and behavioral outcomes of individuals with autism and related developmental disabilities served in comprehensive public schools. VCU - ACE is one state grant project under the VCU Research Rehabilitation and Training Center ( VCU - RRTC ). The purpose of the VCU - RRTC is to facilitate the provision of state-of-the-art services for individuals with disabilities across the lifespan that promote access to competitive employment opportunities.

Chief purpose of this position in support of above mission or goal

VCU - ACE improves services and supports for individuals with autism spectrum disorder ( ASD ) by promoting the implementation of evidence-based practices in schools through training, technical assistance, research, and collaboration with other VDOE entities serving local school divisions.

Training includes providing professional development to expand the expectations, knowledge, and skills of those who live with, educate, and support individuals with ASD . It supports the sustainable implementation of evidence-based practices by providing instructional activities and resources to anyone who wants to learn more about ASD and to leaders who guide professional development initiatives in home, school, and community.

Technical assistance includes facilitating, implementing, and evaluating division level initiatives to meet the unique needs of stakeholders in identified regions across the Commonwealth. It supports the sustainable implementation and evaluation of evidence-based practices by providing team facilitation, coaching, and strategic planning services to build the capacity and confidence of those who support individuals with ASD .

Research includes asking questions, seeking answers, and disseminating findings on socially significant issues impacting individuals with ASD across the lifespan to improve quality of life. Research is conducted in real-world settings using sound research methodologies.

Collaboration includes maintaining a spirit of cooperation in our interactions with colleagues and developing and sustaining partnerships with individuals with ASD and their families as well as local, commonwealth, and national entities to enrich, develop, disseminate, and deliver training, technical assistance, and research activities.

Position Responsibilities

The Training and Technical Assistance Associate will provide embedded technical assistance to schools and school divisions in Superintendents Region 6 in Virginia to increase capacity and improve services for students with ASD across the age range; coach and mentor teachers, principals, paraprofessionals, and other educational staff in the implementation of evidence-based practices for individuals with ASD ; assist schools and school systems in developing systems change plans for improving services to students with ASD ; facilitate school autism teams in implementing data-based systems change plans; participate in planning and implementing regional Communities of Leaders in Autism for multiple school divisions; develop and deliver targeted training in multiple live and online formats; coordinate and collaborate with statewide stakeholders on the development of additional products to meet the needs of students with ASD across the state. This will require a significant commitment of time teaching /personnel training that includes the development and delivery of teacher prep and/or teacher recertification coursework approved by VDOE . The Training and Technical Assistance Associate will maintain excellent communication with supervisor, co-workers, and external staff through written and verbal communication; complete documentation of time for data collecting and reporting, respond to requests for information in a timely manner through electronic communication, and other means; and complete additional projects as assigned to support the Autism Center for Excellence’s work in local and statewide service improvement plans and statewide goals. Additionally, the Training and Technical Assistance Associate will have a commitment to original research, scholarship, and dissemination of new knowledge, as well as assist with data collection and research development as it relates to the goals of the Autism Center for Excellence.

Required Qualifications

Master’s degree in Education, Psychology, Behavior Analysis, or a closely related field and/or equivalent training.

BCBA® certification and state licensure or currently enrolled in coursework to obtain BCBA® certification.

Extensive experience in delivering behavior analytic services in applied settings.

Extensive applied knowledge of autism and associated evidence-based practices used with children and adolescents with Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Prior experience in teaching or administration in public school systems.

Prior experience delivering systematic personnel training and technical assistance within public school settings.

Excellent communication skills.

Regional and overnight travel is occasionally required.

Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU .

Preferred Qualifications

Statewide training and technical assistance experience, knowledge and experience executing organizational based management techniques in a public system.

Resides in or is willing to relocate to any of the following divisions in Region 6: Alleghany County, Botetourt County, Covington City, Craig County, Danville City, Floyd County, Franklin County, Henry County, Martinsville City, Montgomery County, Patrick County, Pittsylvania County, Roanoke City, Roanoke County, Salem City upon hire.
