Whitman College seeks to hire a full-time Director of Sports Performance & the Baker-Ferguson Fitness Center to work in its Athletic Department. This position will be responsible for the leadership, oversight, management, programming, services, and operations of a successful NCAA Division III Sport Performance and strength and conditioning program that services and supports seventeen intercollegiate teams. This individual will also oversee the Baker-Ferguson Fitness Center which is the central hub for campus fitness. The candidate will establish a set of core training principles and standards for teaching and coaching. The position will also provide leadership in the planning, programming, and oversight of the Baker-Ferguson Fitness Center to ensure optimal operations and maximum outreach to the entire campus community.

  1. Responsible for leading and directing all phases of sport performance and the strength and conditioning programs for Whitman's nine women's and eight men's NCAA intercollegiate programs.
  2. Responsible for leading and directing all phases of the Baker-Ferguson Fitness Center which serves as the college's main fitness facility.
  3. Designs, organizes, and supervises individual and team training sessions during the academic year within the framework of Whitman College and a NCAA Division III philosophy.
  4. Conducts all workouts and programming in accordance with NCAA and NWC Conference policies and rules for teams' appropriate in-season and out-of-season training periods. Promotes a drug-free training environment.
  5. Works collaboratively with head coaches to design and conduct pre-season, in-season, and out-of-season strength and conditioning programming, testing and assessments for all student-athletes in seventeen sports.
  6. Designs, develops, implements and evaluates evidence and scientific-based strength conditioning programs which may include, warm-up, flexibility, speed improvement, strength, cool-down and recovery programs.
  7. Works in coordination with the sports medicine staff on injury rehabilitation and return-to-play protocols for student-athletes that have been injured, had surgery, or have strength and/or flexibility deficiencies.
  8. Teaches and evaluates the correct form and technique on all strength and speed, agility, and quickness training.
  9. Oversees and supervises the day-to-day operations of the fitness center to maintain optimal operations and a clean and safe environment for all members. Creates a positive and welcoming environment for all members.
  10. Assists in the daily functioning of the fitness facility and program including scheduling hours of operation for BFFC (open 90 hrs./wk. during the school year).
  11. Serves as a liaison with the facilities director and the aquatic director in the overall management of the BFFC, including custodial, maintenance and security needs for building events, needs and upkeep.
  12. Oversees the maintenance, safety and condition of all fitness related equipment in the area including routine maintenance, repairs, warranties, and replacement.
  13. Develops and maintains training resources for strength training, stretching, nutrition, sleep, and other fitness/training elements for student to access and use.
  14. Serves as an instructor for designated classes including, but not limited to: Conditioning, Cardio-Fitness, and Weight Training.
  15. Oversees, monitors, and balances the budget and all financial operations within the programs of oversight.
  16. Represents the college, the BFFC and the athletic department with honesty, integrity, and sportsmanship at all times, to various institutional programs and students, parents, the general public, alumni and external agencies. Develops a positive, professional relationship with officials, league personnel, and coaching colleagues.

  1. Knowledgeable in Division III athletics and administrative practices.
  2. Understanding of the role that athletics and recreation play in a college committed to academic excellence and cultural diversity.
  3. Effective administrative methods and effective leadership, organization, interpersonal, and communication skills.
  4. Ability to work effectively with faculty, staff, students, parents and alumni from diverse ethnic, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
  5. Demonstrated knowledge and ability to work within the framework of college policies, the NWC and NCAA Division III philosophy and rules.

  • Minimum 1-3 years in successful sport performance/strength training experience
  • Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist certification (CSCS) through the NSCA or Strength and Conditioning Coach Certified (SCCC) by the CSCCa
  • Current CPR/AED certifications

  • Sport performance and/or strength training experience at the college level preferred.
  • Background in intercollegiate athletics coverage of men's and women's athletic teams preferred.
  • Registered Strength and Conditioning Coach (RSCC) preferred.
