DEPARTMENT OF MUSIC: The Claflin University Department of Music is an institutional member of the National Association of Schools of Music (NASM). Its degree requirements are in accordance with the latest published regulations of that association. The department is also accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE). As a degree-granting department, we offer two major programs of study: BA in Music Education and BA in Music and will launch a jazz studies concentration in the fall 2021 .

RESPONSIBILITIES: Develop a strategic plan for the band/instrumental program, conduct or supervise all instrumental ensembles, advise students, teach instrumental methods and band administration related courses, supervise student teachers, and teach other undergraduate courses in music education depending on the Department of Music needs. Additional teaching responsibilities may include other courses within the candidate’s areas of expertise. The Director of Bands (DOB) oversees the budget for all band and instrumental ensemble scholarship as well as the instrumental inventory. The DOB is expected to maintain a positive profile among South Carolina band directors to actively recruit instrumental students within the state. The DOB must work closely with studio teachers to recruit and maintain suitable numbers for each instrument in the department. The DOB must maintain an active presence with the SC NAfME Association and the SC Band Director Association. In addition, the DOB is expected to participate fully in departmental and community performance obligations consistent with all ensemble conducting appointments. The candidate is expected to participate fully in departmental activities such as recruitment, advising and mentoring, and to fulfill University requirements of committee service, grantsmanship, and expected to be significantly active in creative and/or research activities consistent with all faculty appointments. The DOB is also expected to promote the Department within the state, nationally and internationally.

QUALIFICATIONS: A graduate degree in instrumental music education/instrumental performance is required; a completed doctorate is required for tenure-track appointment and the rank of Assistant Professor. Additionally, a valid teaching certification in Music Education with a minimum of 3 years of successful teaching within K-12 schools is required. The candidate should have a strong background in the study, performance and teaching of instrumental music and proven ability in recruiting for, developing, and maintaining a competitive Wind Ensemble/Instrumental music program. The successful candidate will have: 1) the ability to build and maintain professional relationships and to work collaboratively with public school band programs; 2) the ability to teach, advise and mentor students from diverse educational and cultural backgrounds; 3) a thorough knowledge of current technology and command of teaching in multiple learning modalities.
