General Summary:

Perform routine lab processes. Follow routine protocols under close supervision. Operate standard equipment, use standard procedures for specific laboratory tests and preparation techniques.

Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for the maintenance of our animal colony and ensure compliance with all the rules and regulations mandated by our animal protocol.
  • Monitors inventory levels, orders materials and supplies in accordance with established policies and procedures, counts orders upon receipt.
  • Responsible for the acquisition of essential material and reagent and the maintenance of laboratory equipment.
  • Assist in the implementation of scientific research and provide technical assistance when needed.

Required:

  • High School Diploma or GED

Preferred:

  • Bachelor of Science in Biology

Special Skills and Knowledge:

  • Must be detail oriented, keep clear experimental records, have effective organizational skills, and be able to prioritize workload appropriately. Must be able to perform multiple tasks efficiently and correctly, often operating more than one instrument at a time. Experience in basic laboratory procedures required.
  • Carries out duties and responsibilities with limited supervision. Makes decisions and establishes work priorities on essentially procedure-oriented operations. Engages in regular and continuous decision making having an impact on people, costs, and/or quality of service.
  • Exchanges routine information in an appropriate manner requiring good oral and written communication skills.
  • Knows the informal policies, procedures, and practices necessary to conduct the normal function of a specific section, unit, or work area. Is aware of the role of the position and its potential impact on the working unit.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
