General Summary/Purpose:

The Language Neuromodulation Lab in the Department of Neurology of Johns Hopkins Medicine is looking for (1) Research Assistant for an NIH-funded project on the effects of transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) in neurodegenerative disease, specifically PPA and Alzheimer’s disease (AD). The project is devoted to the study of language intervention(s) and neuroplasticity in PPA and AD. We aim to understand the effectiveness of behavioral and neuromodulatory interventions, as well as the brain mechanisms they involve using neuroimaging (structural MRI, DTI, fMRI, resting state fMRI, and MR spectroscopy).

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

  • The Research Assistant will be involved in evaluating participants in a range of standardized language and cognitive tasks, delivering a pre-determined speech and language training session, archiving language, cognitive and therapy results, maintaining patients’ files, and analyzing oral and written therapy data.
  • The RA will also be maintaining and managing imaging databases, perform preprocessing of data in different imaging modalities and extract information for participants.
  • The ideal candidate should have knowledge of basic neuroanatomy, be able to conduct behavioral assessments for participants with language and cognitive deficits, maintain databases, learn to perform statistical analyses, present research at conferences, and assist in writing papers.
  • Programming experience and computational skills with ePrime, Matlab and/or R are desired.
  • The ideal applicant will be highly motivated, organized, personable, willing to learn, responsible, reliable and efficient.
  • The RA will work collaboratively with undergraduate and doctoral students, post-doctoral fellows, speech-language pathologists, and other faculty members of the Johns Hopkins community.
  • An interested individual will be trained in administering testing protocols at follow-up intervals, and will assist in manuscript preparation, including writing up some of his/her own abstracts and presenting at scientific meetings.

Minimum Qualifications (mandatory):

  • Bachelor's degree in related discipline.
  • Some related research experience in cognitive psychology, neurolinguistics, cognitive science, neuroscience or related field.
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for required education, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

JHU Equivalency Formula:30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Prior experience with people with aphasia and MRI research are highly desirable.
  • The successful applicant should be highly motivated, organized, personable, willing to learn, responsible, reliable, and efficient.
  • The candidate must be comfortable working with patients with neurodegenerative syndromes.

Technical Qualifications:

  • Able to use Word, Excell, powerpoint, databases, able to learn data management, preferred Matlab or R knowledge.

Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
