The UGA Libraries is located on the University of Georgia’s main campus in Athens, Georgia. Its facilities include the Main Library, Science Library, Zell B. Miller Learning Center, Map and Government Information Library, Richard B. Russell Special Collections Libraries, Health Science Carnegie Library, and Repository, which receive more than three million visits per year and provide a vast array of electronic and print resources. They offer extensive hours, including 24/7 operation at the Miller Learning Center. The UGA Libraries offer distinctive, nationally significant special collections, including the Hargrett Rare Book and Manuscript Library, Richard B. An ALA -accredited master’s degree in librarianship/information science or foreign equivalent or a master’s degree in a subject area related to archival work.

Position Summary

The Digital Archivist leads the processing, preservation, and access of the Hargrett and Russell Libraries’ born-digital archival collections. This newly developed position collaborates with staff from both Libraries to execute and maintain existing, shared workflows to manage the born-digital files within larger collections. Depending on the collection, this position will either provide technical support to processing staff or do the processing in consultation with the subject expert.

The Digital Archivist reports to the Head of Digital Stewardship and works closely with the University Archivist, Russell Head of Arrangement and Description, and Hargrett Director. Collections housed in the Hargrett and Russell Libraries are hybrid collections typically consisting of physical papers, artifacts, audiovisual materials, and born-digital files.

This position is housed in the UGA Special Collections Libraries, a 115,000 square foot facility that provides collections storage, exhibition and event space, research and instruction rooms, staff workspace, and digitization facilities for UGA’s three special collections libraries: The Hargrett Rare Book and Manuscript Library, the Richard B. Russell Library for Political Research and Studies, and the Walter J. Brown Media Archive and Peabody Awards Collection. The mission of the University of Georgia Special Collections Libraries is to acquire, organize, preserve, and provide access to unique and rare materials related to the history and culture of Georgia.

Additional Requirements

An ALA -accredited master’s degree in librarianship/information science or foreign equivalent OR relevant Master’s degree with ACA certification expected in 5 years for continued employment.

Candidates will be considered at the rank of Librarian I, II, III, or IV.
All candidates must have an ALA -accredited Master’s in Library and Information Science or foreign equivalent or a master’s degree in a subject area related to archival work.
To be considered at the level of Librarian II, candidates must have 2 years of professional experience after completion of their master’s degree.
To be considered at the level of Librarian III, candidates must have 5 years of professional experience after completion of their master’s degree.
To be considered at the level of Librarian IV, candidates must have 10 years of professional experience after completion of their master’s degree.

Relevant/Preferred Education, Experience, Licensure, and/or Certification Preferred Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies

Familiarity with accessioning and processing digital records as part of an established digital archives program.

Working knowledge of common tools for digital archives, such as bags, digital forensics, and format identification tools.

Familiarity with web archiving. Working knowledge of Archive-It.

Familiarity with digital archival standards such as OAIS, Trusted Digital Repositories, and PREMIS .

Working knowledge of using and writing scripts, preferably in Python, and using the command line.

Familiarity with accessioning and processing collections in an archives or special collections library, especially using an archival information management system such as ArchivesSpace.

Understanding of the value of diversity, inclusion and accessibility in the workplace, and particularly in regard to the appraisal and description of information resources.

Demonstrated ability to acquire new skills, learn new technology, and solve problems.

Demonstrated ability to efficiently manage multiple projects and priorities. Familiarity with collaborative tools such as Trello or Airtable.

Demonstrated ability to update workflows and documentation.

Effective verbal and written communication skills.

Ability to create and maintain productive, long-term, effective working relationships with faculty, students, and colleagues.

Supports accessioning, processing and access to born-digital archives by providing technical support to processing and reference staff and in some cases doing the accessioning and processing in consultation with subject experts.

Manages the preservation of born-digital archives using the UGA Libraries’ local digital preservation system (ARCHive).

Manages the UGA Libraries’ web archiving program.

Assists donors with the transfer of born-digital archives.

Maintains and improves existing, shared born-digital archives workflows, policies, and documentation.

Serves on the UGA Libraries’ Digital Curation Working Group and participates in digital archives initiatives and planning in Special Collections and Libraries-wide.

Maintains an awareness of current trends in archives and digital preservation by participating in and contributing to professional activities and through continued professional development.
