Position Primary Purpose and General Responsibilities

The VCU School of Education aims to be the leader in urban education through leveraging existing resources and talents among our faculty, centers and institutes, and relationships with agencies in the community to expand innovation, excellence, and impact in schools, communities, families, and children. We prepare effective and highly skilled teachers, counselors, school administrators, higher education faculty, and other education professionals committed to addressing challenges in urban schools, communities, and families. Ranked as #10 for best grad online programs of education and #16 of public schools of education by U.S. News & World Report, the VCU School of Education focuses its teaching, interdisciplinary research, and development efforts on issues of educational equity, social justice, and the complexities of poverty that impact student learning and family engagement.

The VCU School of Education seeks an experienced higher education leader who is student-focused, innovative, creative, data-informed, and results-oriented. Working under the general direction and administrative guidance of the Assistant Dean for Student Affairs and Inclusive Excellence, the Director for Student Success will have responsibility for strategic, programmatic, and management functions that support the mission of the School of Education and its role within the broader university. Through a critical lens of and a strong commitment to diversity, equity, access, inclusion, and antiracist practices in higher education student services, the new leader will bring experience in a broad range of student programs and services; leading promising practices for increased student retention and success; experience with academic advising for undergraduate and/or graduate students; the ability to support students from varying backgrounds and experiences; and exceptional program management skills. The Director will be expected to help implement an integrated student support system that facilitates both academic achievement and career success for School of Education students.

Minimum Hiring Standards

-Master’s degree in student personnel, higher education, counseling, organizational behavior, or a similar field;
-Five to seven years of relevant student affairs experience, including progressive management responsibilities and demonstrated experience in academic advising;
-Team-oriented individual with excellent interpersonal and leadership skills;
-Demonstrated practice in advancing access, equity, and quality education for learners from historically marginalized and underrepresented minority populations living in poverty and/or the educators that serve them;
-Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse and inclusive faculty, staff, and student environment and commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU ;
-Excellent written and verbal communication skills;
-Excellent administrative and organizational skills, including the ability to identify and resolve complex administrative problems.

Preferred Hiring Standards

-Experience administering retention programs at the graduate or undergraduate level;
-Demonstrated knowledge of and/or experience with data analytics to evaluate the effectiveness of programs and initiatives as it pertains to student success.
