The Community Colleges of Spokane is seeking a highly motivated and qualified individual for the position of Assistant Dean in the Arts and Sciences Division at Spokane Community College.

GENERAL DEFINITION

Under direction from the Dean of Arts and Sciences, the Assistant Dean for Arts and Sciences is responsible for assisting the Dean in leading a diverse division that provides high-quality transfer education and related instruction to professional/technical programs. The Communication Studies, English and Foreign Language, Mathematics, Social Sciences and Humanities, and Science departments serve over 3,000 students (1,800 FTE) each year.

CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provide division-specific and campus-wide leadership in the development, enhancement, promotion of, and support for defined academic programs, including the SCC Honors Program. Work collaboratively with faculty, deans, chairs, and students to ensure the continual improvement of the division in support of student success. *
  • Support faculty and staff in professional development, student achievement initiatives, assessment, program review and instructional/program innovations. *
  • Supervise (e.g. recruit, select, train, schedule, and discipline) faculty, professional exempt, and classified employees, including, but not limited to, office staff and instructional technicians. Adhere to the faculty Master Contract, classified bargaining agreement/rules, and CCS policies and procedures.  *
  • Coordinate onboarding and evaluation of adjunct instructors. *
  • Function as the administrator on faculty probationary/tenure committees. 
  • Directly oversee Tutoring Services. *
  • In consultation with the Dean, address questions and disputes regarding contracts and instructor workloads, assist in the supervision and management of faculty and provide direct supervision to classified, professional exempt, and/or work study students. Adhere to the faculty Master Contract, classified bargaining agreement/rules, and all district rules and regulations ensuring efficient operations and student success. *
  • Responsible for ensuring assigned faculty/staff adhere to acceptable behavior and performance standards.  Demonstrate that assigned faculty/staff have been informed how behavior and performance will be assessed, receive timely and accurate feedback regarding performance, and any observed performance and behavioral problems are corrected promptly. *
  • Support and advance the CCS strategic plan, and perform other duties as assigned. *

COMPETENCIES & OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS)
  • Master’s degree in an academic discipline, including, but not limited to, social sciences, math, science, English, communications, or education,  or in another closely-related field, from an accredited institution.
  • Leadership in higher education.
  • Experience with and knowledge of the broad spectrum of disciplines in Arts and Sciences.
  • Demonstrate the ability to lead and manage complex initiatives and to work effectively across organizations.
  • Proven ability to work cooperatively with staff, faculty, students, administration, and members of the public.
  • Effective interpersonal skills with an ability to establish strong relationships and partnerships.
  • Post-secondary teaching experience.
  • Acceptance of the responsibility to promote the welfare and best interests of students at all times.
  • A demonstrable understanding and acceptance of the mission, values, goals and objectives of CCS.
  • The ability to perform assigned duties in a manner consistent with applicable laws, regulations and goals of the institution, and community and technical college system.
  • Demonstrated commitment to fostering and supporting a teaching, learning and working environment that honors diversity, equity and inclusion.
PREFERRED COMPETENCIES (DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS)
  • Experience in a community college culture.
  • Experience with collective bargaining units and labor contracts in higher education.
  • Experience supervising employees.
 

CONDITIONS/TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:

TOTAL COMPENSATION $107,639 - $110,613.
 Total compensation is an estimate based upon adding the following amounts together:
  • Base compensation, plus
  • Current employer-paid health and related benefit contribution rates, plus
  • Median retirement fund contributions. 
  • The actual total will vary depending upon each employee's enrollment choices.

    Person hired must be able to provide acceptable documentation of U.S. Citizenship or lawful authorization to work in the United States. This is an absolute condition of employment. An offer of employment will not carry with it any responsibility or obligation on the part of the District to sponsor an H1-B visa.   In addition, the Community Colleges of Spokane maintains a drug-free work environment and prohibits all smoking in the college buildings and state-owned vehicles. Must be able to successfully work in and promote a multicultural work and education environment.  Prior to a new hire, a background check including criminal record history will be conducted.  Information from the background check will not necessarily preclude employment but will be considered in determining the applicant’s suitability and competence to perform in the position.  Once an applicant is chosen for an interview, they are required to complete and submit a declaration regarding sexual misconduct and investigation per state law.

    PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
    • Work is performed in a normal, temperature controlled office environment.
    • Work is sedentary in nature.
    • Frequent use of computer and exposure to terminal screens.
    • Work directly with students/clients.
    • Work involves constant interruptions and requirement to answer on demand questions by phone, in person, or electronically.
    • Frequent repetitive hand/wrist motions and finger manipulation.
    • Frequent oral and auditory communication with others.
    CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
    • Contract 12 month position.
    • Position is exempt from Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA).
    • May require local or regional travel. If using personal vehicle proof of driver's license and car insurance required.
    • Valid motor vehicle operator license required.
    • Criminal background check required.
