Athletic Training, Assistant/Associate Professor of Education, General Faculty

The Department of Kinesiology in the School of Education and Human Development at the University of Virginia seeks applicants for a 12-month tenure-ineligible Assistant or Associate Professor in the area of Athletic Training.

Responsibilities include serving as the Clinical Education Coordinator of the Master of Science in Athletic Training (MSAT) program, teaching graduate courses in athletic training and, occasionally, undergraduate kinesiology courses in their area of specialization, and advising MSAT students and undergraduate kinesiology majors.  Serving as the MSAT Clinical Education Coordinator, the incumbent is responsible for establishing and maintaining relationships with clinical education sites and preceptors; facilitating an outstanding student experience; coordinating efforts related to clinical skills testing, simulation experiences, and interprofessional practice opportunities for MSAT students; assistance maintaining the Commission on the Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE) accreditation for the MSAT program; contributing to the institutional service activities at the department, school, and/or university level as well as to athletic training professional service activities at the state, regional, and national levels in a manner consistent with a recognized leader in athletic training education.

Qualifications

  • A doctoral degree (PhD, EdD, DAT, DPT, or equivalent) in athletic training or closely related area is required by the start date of the position. 
  • The successful candidate must have experience teaching or serving as a clinical preceptor in a CAATE-accredited Athletic Training program, be BOC-certified as an as a Certified Athletic Trainer (ATC) for at least five years, and currently licensed or eligible for licensure as an athletic trainer in Virginia.
  • Experience as a Clinical Education Coordinator in a CAATE-accredited athletic training program is preferred, as is experience teaching Athletic Training courses related to Psychosocial Aspects of Injury, Medical Aspects of Athletic Training, Emergency Care, and/or Administration Strategies in Athletic Training. 
  • At least five years of clinical practice as an athletic trainer is also preferred.
  • Knowledge of CAATE accreditation standards for professional programs is essential. 
  • The ability to implement a variety of pedagogical techniques appropriate for academically diverse learners is required, as is respect for diversity and the richness of human difference.  
  • The ability to envision and enact exceptional clinical education experiences as part of an innovative, successful, and nationally-recognized MSAT program is preferred, along with a proven record of collaboration with diverse groups of students, faculty, and clinical preceptors. 
  • The ability to use technology, including simulations, in innovative ways to enhance instruction and to teach online is preferred.
