Job Description

The Head, Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine (VTCSOM) Library leads the VTCSOM Library staff, services, collections, technology, and facility. The head provides medical students, faculty and staff with instruction, research assistance, outreach; and referrals to University Libraries departments and colleagues. The head collaborates and consults with University Libraries, VTCSOM, and Virginia Tech Carilion libraries consortium partners to develop collections, services, and programs. University Libraries colleagues collaborate with the head to support the Roanoke Health Sciences and Technology campus community. Throughout all activities, the head librarian actively supports library efforts to provide an inclusive and diverse library and work environment committed to the Virginia Tech Principles of Community and uses inclusive communication methods to liaise effectively with partners and audiences. This position includes support and time for professional development, professional engagement, and committee service.

Required Qualifications

- Master’s degree in library/information science from an ALA-accredited graduate program or a terminal degree in a field related to library/information sciences, health sciences, life sciences, or biomedical sciences.
- Experience with a variety of library services, such as: research assistance, instruction, liaison librarianship, technology selection and training, collection development and management (physical and/or electronic resources), public service point interactions (circulation, integrated library systems), or technical services.
- Experience in public services library management or in a related leadership position.
- Experience in a medical, biomedical, health sciences, or health-related field or library.
- Supervisory experience, including program conceptualization, planning and implementation, and promoting a collaborative and inclusive work environment
- Experience in outreach, relationship building, and collaboration with diverse populations and groups.

Preferred Qualifications

- Experience managing a library budget, staff, facility, and/or programming using equitable practices that promote a welcoming, inclusive, and supportive environment for employees and the community.
- Experience using a collaborative approach providing leadership and direction in a rapidly changing research library.
- Experience providing research services or instruction for health or life sciences researchers (of any level) in an academic or clinical environment.
- Experience in evaluating and implementing new information resources and technologies, especially those relevant to medicine and health.
- Experience in *one* of the following areas: health equity; patient rights and advocacy; patient education; collaboration and team science; experiential or problem-based learning; one health; community health engagement; health literacy; health technology; community-based research; critical appraisal; evidence synthesis or systematic reviews; expert searching; research impact and communication.

Work Location: Roanoke, VA (possible occasional travel to other Virginia Tech campuses or locations, such as Blacksburg, the National Capital Region, or agricultural extension locations)
