The History Department at Hollins University in Roanoke, Virginia invites applications for a Visiting Assistant Professor of Modern European History (after 1800). This is a full-time, one-year leave replacement position beginning July 1, 2021.
The teaching load for the year will be six classes (typically three classes per semester, though there may be an opportunity to contribute a class during the January short term). Teaching responsibilities will include a variety of courses at the introductory and advanced levels. Additionally, candidates will be expected to help with the supervision of senior theses in their area of specialization. The successful candidate will possess expertise in the history of interactions between Europe and the wider world, and will demonstrate the ability to emphasize comparative, transnational, and/or global perspectives in their teaching. Desired specializations include, but are not limited to, the following themes: empire and colonialism, gender and sexuality, migration, science, medicine, technology, and environment.
Candidates must have a Ph.D. in history in hand by July 1, 2021 and a strong record of teaching at the undergraduate level. Applicants must also demonstrate a clear understanding of and commitment to teaching excellence and innovation at a liberal arts institution. Applications are sought from those who have demonstrated success working with diverse populations, and share Hollins’ commitment to preparing students for leadership opportunities in a broadly diverse, global society. Final candidates will be subject to a criminal history background check.
Qualified candidates should submit a cover letter, a curriculum vitae, a separate statement of teaching philosophy, three letters of recommendation, and graduate school transcripts (unofficial transcripts are acceptable) to historysearch@hollins.edu . Candidates are encouraged to comment in their cover letter on how their contributions will further the university’s efforts to ensure the success and inclusion of all members of its community. Review of applications will begin January 25, 2021, and will continue until the position is filled.
