ATTENTION:

The Department of Institutional Research & Planning at the University of Wisconsin – Whitewater seeks a Institutional Research Business Intelligence Analyst.

This is an annual position and reappointment for subsequent terms is dependent upon needs of the position, university funding and external forces.

JOB DETAILS:

This position reports to the Chief of Institutional Research and Planning and the incumbent has primary responsibility for managing the submission of university data to UW System through the CDR (Central Data Request) process each term, analyzing student admissions, enrollment, and degree data, and overseeing consistency in reporting across the data modules/life cycle.

This position supports the institutional research function through data analytics and reporting. Analyses range from complex institutional research projects to standard reports. Scope of responsibility includes all phases of a report from design, to data gathering, calculating and analysis of data, and report preparation and distribution. Report development may require coordination across a range of collaborators. Written reports include context, data, conclusions, technical notes, and recommendations. Examples include UW System reporting, Fact Book, enrollment trend analyses, curricular reporting, and more.

This position will support and enhance the availability of analytical resources for use by the university community. The incumbent will contribute to the development of resources that provide all university constituents with metrics needed to evaluate and understand academic and administrative activity and performance. Examples include development of data visualizations and dashboards using Tableau Software, reports in PDF or Excel format, infographics or workflows.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree with three years of experience
  • Background and understanding of data and information management from one or more of the following subject areas: computer science, social science, research methodology, mathematics or statistics, or closely related field
  • Two years in a role that includes data and analysis activities, preferably in a higher education setting
Desired Qualifications:
  • Master's degree, or other graduate or professional degree
  • Previous experience in an Institutional Research setting
  • Knowledge of higher education ERP system preferred (i.e., PeopleSoft)
  • Experience with basic database programming skills is helpful for efficient querying. Ability and willingness to quickly learn new tools and technologies
  • Experience with the development of data visualizations; experience with Tableau Desktop, Tableau Server, and/or Tableau Prep is highly desirable
  • Understanding of higher education data structures; understanding the data life cycle; experience identifying and correcting data quality issues
  • Experience with data sets across the student life cycle including admissions, student, curricular, degree, as well as HR and financial systems
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Experience routinely accessing and querying enterprise data using effective tools or applications
  • Experience in formatting data and information for dissemination to a range of users with varying levels of expertise
  • Experience creating, manipulating, and extracting information from large data sets. This is a “critical thinking” job that requires the individual to draw on technical skills with use of large data sets to answer questions about the university. Thus, skill and experience with Excel, Tableau, or related analytic tools is a requirement
  • Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail combined with understanding of big picture, strong interpersonal skills and teamwork skills, excellent verbal and written communication skills, and ability to work independently as well as cooperatively
  • Willingness and ability to be an active participant in following applicable safety rules and regulations including necessary training and drills
  • Ability to interact respectfully with people from diverse socioeconomic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds
RESPONSIBILITIES:
  1. Advise on the implementation of new or changes to data elements or information systems to ensure that the data maintains integrity, and the data structure serves the analytical needs of the university. This requires an understanding of how data flows from the point of collection to analysis and how it can be used to meet the needs of campus leaders.
  2. Design and develop metrics and reporting strategies related to assessment and accountability for a range of academic and nonacademic activities. Such efforts use university data and incorporate data from national sources such as IPEDS and other peer data systems.
  3. Observe professional, ethical, and legal standards for data security and confidentiality.
  4. Responsible for university CDR (Central Data Request) data submissions to UW System, including completion of CEUS data edits and verifications.
  5. Support and enhance the availability of data and analytical resources for use by the campus community. Continually advocate for data structures that serve the analytical needs of the university. This may include: recommendations for data storage based on reporting needs, campus analytical needs, or opportunities for improved processes and efficiency; continual improvement of a data warehouse for end users to perform their work; and support greater understanding of data access levels and how campus data flows from the point of collection to analysis and utilization.
  6. Query writing and data extraction to support inquiries from faculty, staff, and administration for data analysis
  7. Perform data mining for data inquiries, projects, and historical trend reporting
  8. Perform data analysis and reporting to support compliance, accreditation, strategic planning, and academic/nonacademic needs. Coordinate efforts with other university offices as necessary.
  9. Development of publications and visualizations for the dissemination of relevant data.
  10. Lead and engage with the Operational Tier data governance committee meetings and activities
  11. Support institutional data governance and integrity
  12. Work independently and in teams to perform detailed analysis, manage complexity, and ensure accuracy with strict deadlines
  13. Provide support for the development of data dashboards, reports, retention analytics, and data exploration
  14. Develop technical documentation as necessary
  15. Serve as Brand Administrator of the campus online survey software (Qualtrics); collaborate with Qualtrics Brand Administrators at other UW campuses.
  16. Serve as the campus Tableau Server administrator; collaborate with Tableau Server administrators at other UW campuses and UW System; participate in UW Tableau Server administrator meetings
  17. Revise and maintain content and design on the department web site as it relates to data dissemination
  18. Other duties as assigned
DEPARTMENT INFORMATION:

The Office of Institutional Research and Planning at University of Wisconsin-Whitewater is responsible for the development and maintenance of data resources to support the strategic planning and policy-making processes at the university, fulfilling compliance reporting requirements at both the federal and state levels, facilitating the dissemination of data in a timely and accurate manner, and promoting institutional effectiveness through the development and use of self-assessment and benchmarking tools.
