Position Description

The Department of Literary Arts & Studies at Rhode Island School of Design, Providence, RI, invites applications for a 1-year term, full-time faculty appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor in Residence to commence fall 2021.

Rhode Island School of Design ( RISD ) recognizes diversity and inclusivity as fundamental to its learning community and integral to an art and design education. The department seeks a colleague specializing in Asian American and/or Latin American literatures, and is particularly interested in candidates who are committed to interdisciplinary endeavors in an art and design environment.

Required Qualifications

● Earned Ph.D. in Asian American and/or Latin American literatures. MFA’s and ABDs with experience teaching self-designed courses will also be considered.
● Evidence of a high level of scholarly practice.
● Experience teaching college-level courses.
● Demonstrated commitment to equity and inclusion.
● Confident communication skills, with proven ability to work collaboratively as part of a team.

Rhode Island School of Design is an undergraduate and graduate college of art and design with approximately 2,400 graduate and undergraduate students.

Rhode Island School of Design has a diverse selection of Liberal Arts courses, which form a third of the credits required for graduation by students in seventeen different undergraduate, art and design majors. The Department of Literary Arts & Studies offers over sixty electives per year in literary/cultural studies, creative writing, and theory. Approximately twenty students graduate each year having completed the LAS Concentration, which requires eight or more courses in the department. Teaching load is six courses per year, including one section of a required, writing-intensive First-Year Literature Seminar and the prospect of teaching in either of two interdisciplinary, Liberal Arts-based masters programs: Global Arts and Cultures and Nature, Culture and Sustainability Studies.

Faculty Responsibilities

In addition to teaching, full-time faculty are expected to maintain a professional practice, serve on college committees, advise students, participate in curriculum development and other departmental activities and projects, and contribute to the vibrancy of the intellectual life of the college.

Pending administrative approval, term appointments may be renewed for a second year.
