The School of Journalism and Media at the University of Texas at Austin invites applications for a full-time faculty member to begin in Fall 2021. We welcome applicants for this open-rank position who follow either research-oriented or professional/creative career trajectories. Rank will be determined on the basis of experience and qualifications.

The successful candidate will have significant experience as a practitioner of photojournalism. Candidates for the research track will have a Ph.D. with a demonstrated program of research and publication. The successful candidate on the professional/creative track will be an individual of professional standing with achievements including publication, exhibition and award recognition. For either track, university teaching experience and a commitment to teaching excellence are considered highly desirable.

The School is part of the top-ranked Moody College of Communication, which is also home to other award-winning departments in communication studies; speech, language and hearing; film and television production; and advertising and public relations. The School, which offers B.J., M.A., and Ph.D. degrees, is housed in the Belo Center for New Media.

Qualifications

In addition to still photography, a successful candidate must demonstrate experience with other forms of visual storytelling such as documentary video, multimedia work, and data visualization. This successful candidate also will demonstrate a forward-focused capacity to navigate ongoing changes in the landscape of visual journalism for new generations of students that incorporate ethical photojournalism sensibilities into cross-platform work. Any successful candidate must also have a commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion, and a track record of using photojournalism to depict the diversity of the human experience.
