Job Description:
SUNY Empire State College seeks applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor in the field of Criminal Justice to join the Department of Social Science and Public Affairs. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to join a growing department and participate in the building of a new academic program that will serve learners across New York State and, through the college's robust online course offerings, around the world. The department has teaching needs in American Corrections;  Police Community Relations; Alternatives to Incarceration; Criminal Investigation; Race, Crime, and Justice; and Crime and Intelligence Analysis. Full time faculty in the undergraduate programs at Empire State College have responsibilities for student advising (mentoring), in addition to teaching responsibilities. Teaching assignments are expected to be a mix of face-to-face and online classes.

Responsibilities include:

  • Developing and teaching face-to-face and online courses in criminal justice
  • Offering independent studies in the field of criminal justice
  • Mentoring and advising students as they develop individualized and structured degree programs
  • Participating in curriculum development and academic assessment in the Department of Social Science and Public Affairs
  • Participation in college service
  • Development and maintenance of an active research agenda

Requirements:
Required Qualifications:

  • A terminal degree in Criminal Justice or closely related discipline from a regionally accredited U.S. university or comparable non-U.S. university. All But Dissertation (ABD) candidates may be considered if they have a defense date scheduled prior to the start date for the position.
  • College-level teaching experience
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to work within a collaborative faculty environment
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity in higher education

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ability to teach Social Science Research Methods
  • Demonstrated knowledge of adult learning
  • Experience in online and blended teaching modalities
  • A record of scholarly engagement and an established research agenda

Special Information:

  • Teaching in the evening may be required
  • Office hours will vary to accommodate student needs 
  • Some travel and overnights required (2-4 nights per year to attend collegewide meetings)
  • The preferred location is Brooklyn, NY.   Other college locations may be considered, including Rochester, Buffalo, and Long Island (Selden)
  • VISA sponsorship is not available for this position
