General Summary/Purpose

This position is located in the Center for Immunization Research, Department of International Health. The Laboratory Technician will work under the direction of faculty investigators in a research laboratory performing analyses and tests on human blood and fluid specimens for virus vaccine trials.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

Maintain and monitor laboratory supplies.Careful record keeping of sample information toupdate and maintain specimen database(including data entry, data cleaning, and basic aspects of data analysis).Autoclave to sterilize media and disinfect tissue culture waste before discarding in biohazard bag.Carry out routine equipment maintenance and upkeep.Ensures laboratory efficiency by following set protocols for lab cleanliness, organization and safety regulations.Strong organizational skills and meticulous attention to details and deadlines.Work cooperatively with all laboratory personnel in support of assigned laboratory support duties.Process biological specimens including serum, PBMCs, nasal washes and other specimens from vaccine candidates.May participate in laboratory tests and/or experiments which may include tissue culture, ELISA and PCR. Perform miscellaneous related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

High School Diploma/GED with some science coursework.

Preferred Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in biology, chemistry, or related field.

Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of basic use of scientific methods, procedures, and techniques. Work performed is subject to precise measures of quantity and quality.Microsoft office suite, particularly, Word, Excel, Outlook, Sharepoint.

Physical requirements for the job:

Require ability to manipulate objects with fingers rather than with whole hands or arms for tasks such as pipetting and data entry. Will be required to stand or sit for an extended period of time. Requires occasionally lifting and carrying objects weighing up to 20 lbs. Will require occasionally pushing, pulling objects weighing up to 50 lbs.Will require foot travel within the JHMI campus, particularly between the clinic on Broadway Street and the laboratory on Wolfe Street. Will require travel to the inpatient unit on the Bayview campus.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
